Moving to Bedfordshire?
As the smallest of what are often referred to as the ‘shire ‘ counties; Bedfordshire
borders the counties of Cambridgeshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire. The
county is an area of undulating beauty stretching from the plain of the River Ouse
all the way to the Chiltern Hills in a series of attractive valleys. There are no
major cities as such in the county as such, instead there are several pleasant towns
of which Bedford itself is considered the county town. The history of the name Bedfordshire
dates back many centuries and is generally thought to refer to a crossing of ford
in a river, in this case the Ouse and this history dates back to Saxon times. The
town of Bedford was also thought to be the subject of many Danish raids.
Although not in itself a major transport destination due to a lack of major centres
of population, Bedfordshire does lie on the route of many of the country’s principal
transport routes. In fact several of England’s trunk routes including the M1 itself
pass through the county. Additionally, the East, West and Midland mainline rail
routes all pass close by, making the county a major transport thoroughfare. Throw
in the major international airport at Luton and you have the entire transport infrastructure
you could want within a very small county.
In terms of nature, the county can broadly be split into the more industrial southern
half( especially near Luton) and the much more agriculturally orientated northern
portion. Luton itself is an increasingly large centre of urbanisation and would
be the closest you’d get to an actual city in this county and the increasing size
of the airport here is the main factor in the rapid expansion. Other towns of note
in the county are Bedford itself; a pleasant county town, and also the market towns
of Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard are worth a visit.
Bedfordshire has some attractive visitor orientated sites too with Woburn Abbey;
the home of the Duke of Bedford and Whipsnade Park Zoo near Dunstable being two
that attract most visitor numbers on an annual basis.
Bedfordshire then is a most pleasant part of England; offering pleasant country
environments within easy reach of the larger population centres of London and the
Midlands.
