Moving to Devon?

The county of Devon covers some 2,594 square miles of the South West of England. Its principal towns are the cities of Exeter and Plymouth and the resort towns of Torquay, Paignton, Teignmouth and Ilfracombe. Sometimes referred to as Devonshire, particularly by residents, it’s an attractive corner of the country with a fair amount of diversity. Some of the geology of the County is of great historical significance, hence the title given to part of it: ‘The Jurassic Coast’.

Devon was actually one of the first areas to be settled following the last Ice-Age and much later the Romans held the area under military occupation for much of their time in the country. Historically its value was helped greatly by its rich deposits of copper and tin, although fishing was also a more recent industry. These however have largely fallen into decline, putting more emphasis on the main towns as sources of economic strength within the county.

Getting to Devon is reasonably easy too with road links available from the South West as well as London itself. Additionally, Exeter is a stop on the West Coast mainline rail service and Plymouth is a major sea port. Hence, Devon is well served with infrastructure.

Nowadays Devon relies heavily on tourism to fuel its economy and as a result the seaside resorts have taken on quite a bit of importance. Torbay represents the tourism headquarters although much of Devon’s coastline is dominated by tourist towns and villages which sprang up around the times when the railway network reached out that far.

Exmoor and Dartmoor; large areas of moorland in the interior part of the county which came about as a result of the unusual geological nature of the whole region, are popular visitor destinations too, with hikers and campers travelling there year round.

From a commercial point of view you’d be best to visit Exeter as it is a very attractive University town with a nice small-town feel while at the same time offering all the facilities common to most larger cities. By population Plymouth is actually the biggest centre of population in the county and its maritime links have made it quite a large commercial centre in its own right. The Northern part of the county is extremely rural with very few large centres of population but there are some popular seaside towns which offer some of the best surfing opportunities anywhere in the country.

Devon, while at times historically suffering from the decline of inherently important industry; is a diverse county offering a tourism identity combined with pleasant small cities.
