Moving to Poole?
An important ferry port with some of the most unspoiled beaches on the south coast, Poole combines practicality with prettiness in equal measure. It has been inhabited for around two and a half thousand years since the Durotrige tribe moved from hilltop settlements at Maiden Castle and Badbury Rings to heathland around the River Frome and Poole Harbour. The Romans landed at Poole during their conquest of Britain in the 1st century and took over an Iron Age settlement at Hamworthy, an area just west of the modern town centre. The Saxons used the town both as a base for fishing and a harbour. The Vikings invaded twice: in 876 it Guthrum sailed his fleet through the bay to attack Wareham and Canute began his conquest of England from Poole Harbour in 1015. Following the Norman Conquest it grew into a busy port and in 1433 was awarded Staple Port status, enabling the town to start exporting wool. In 1568 it gained independence from Dorset.
During the Civil War, Poole’s puritan stance and opposition to ship tax led the town to declare for the winning side. It established trade links with the American colonies, including the important fisheries of Newfoundland, and thus became a crucial bridge with the Catholic European countries: ships sailed to Newfoundland with salt and provisions, then carried dried and salted fish to Europe before returning to Poole with wine, olive oil, and salt. By the turn of the eighteenth century it was one of the richest ports in the UK. The Napoleonic Wars brought a downturn in trade that was exacerbated by the demands of the Industrial Revolution: ships became too large for the shallow harbour and Poole lost out to Bristol and Liverpool. The arrival of the railway brought an end to the coastal shipping trade. The rise of the tourism industry brought some respite: although Poole never became a resort the proximity of towns such as Bournemouth created a lot of jobs. It was then simultaneously boosted and destroyed by the Second World War: of great strategic importance to the Allied attack including the US reserve force and the D-Day landings, it was heavily bombed by the Germans. Since the war it has again become one of Britain’s busiest ports.
Today, Poole has a great deal to offer visitors. With an excellent climate – average winter lows are 8°C with highs of around 25°C and low rainfall – the pristine golden beaches are always popular. The Quay is a bright attractive mixture of ancient and modern, where medieval warehouses are juxtaposed with luxury apartment blocks, all lined with sculptures by the likes of Anthony Caro. You can try water sports including sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and rowing in the bay. Out in the harbour, Brownsea Island is a stunning nature reserve, home to the endangered red squirrel and birthplace of the international Scouts and Guides movements. It’s also a fantastic bird watching location. Compton Acres Gardens are ten acres of lush themed gardens, from Japanese to Italianate. Poole Park contains tennis courts, a bowling green and a miniature golf course. History lovers will enjoy Poole Museum, whose displays range from pirates to potteries, and Scaplan’s Court Town House, a medieval house with a physic and herb garden.
