Moving to Blandford Forum ?
The pretty market town of Blandford Forum sits on the banks of the River Stour in the County of Dorset, South England. The name, Blandford, signifies its historical importance as a fording point - 'Ford' literally means a shallow place in a river or stream where crossing is possible, either by foot or in a vehicle. 'Forum' is a Latin word meaning market - and the town had become an important market town by the 13th Century. A bi-weekly market continues to this day, held on Thursdays and Saturdays in the market place in the centre of town. It is a great market selling a multitude of things, including local produce, clothes and household goods.
Tragically, in 1731, a great fire swept through the town destroying the greater part of it. Over the next 30 years Johan and William Bastard rebuilt the town, hence Blandford's largley Georgian archictecture. Interestingly they chose to ignore the the Baroque style of town planning fashionable at that time, and instead followed the town's original medieval street planning. The only major change they made was an enlarging of the central marketplace.
Blandford is probably better known as being an'army base'. Blandford Camp is 2km north east of th town and has been home to the Royal Corps of Signals since the 1960s. The Camp does however have a longer history of being a military site - certainly since the early 18th Century when it was used as a training ground for local volunteers. However, the first recorded use for the site was as a racecourse - which explains why there is an area on the site called Race Down!
Blandford is a bustling town with much to offer in way of shops and restaurants, and a collection of fancy and delicious tea rooms. There are events taking place throughout the year, but the most famous is undoubtedly the week long Great Dorset Steam Fair, which is held in September. The Steam Fair is considered to be a National Heritage Show, and the World's leading show of its type! It is a fantastic display of how people have lived, worked and played throughout the ages. You can expect to see a vast magnitude of different machines, steam engines, and the like - AND enjoy music from bands, fairground rides, local beverages and food - and so much more! The fair is visited by thousands every year, from all over the globe!
Being located a mere 15miles from Poole Railway Station, and 15miles from Bournemouth Airport make Blandford an ideal commuting town. There is a good bus service that runs from Blandford to places including, Poole, Bournemouth, Shaftesbury, Wimborne Minster, Salisbury and Dorchester.
The town is situated amidst some truly glorious countryside - with many picture-postcard nearby villages to explore - many of which have traditional local pubs to enjoy. AND of course there is the River Stour - if you fancy fishing, or just rambling along its banks, and maybe, if you are really lucky, you will catch a glimpse of an elusive otter, which have been reintroduced into the are and are doing fantastically well!
