Moving to Bridport ?

Welcome to the market town of Bridport! It is located in West Dorset, South England. Being close to the coast it originally prospered as a fishing port and manufacturer of rope. An interesting, if rather sinister, fact about the town is that at some point in earlier history the Bridport Dagger, the hangman's noose, was required, by statute, to be made from Bridport rope - hence the expression, 'Stabbed with the Bridport dagger'. The port is actually in West Bay, just south of the town - and the bay is not actually a natural bay, but a man-made harbour built on the estuary of the River Brit.

In 1253 the town was granted a charter by King Henry III, and the market has been in operation almost continuously since then. Every Saturday and Wednesday sees the town in full market mode, taking over almost all the main streets! It really is a fantastic market where you can buy anything from household goods to locally grown produce. Locals and visitors alike come in droves to enjoy the vibrant community spirit and to stock up their larders with delicious treats and more!

The nearby Chesil Beach is an 18mile stretch of shingles and is a part of the Jurassic Coast - now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Jurassic Coastline runs for 95miles! It is a haven for hikers and fossil-hunters - and, simply, a sight to behold! The highest point on the coastline, and actually the highest on the entire coast of south Britain, is Golden Cap (191m high). Golden Cap is both a hill and a cliff and is situated between Briport and Charmouth. Owned by the National Trust, it is a wonderful place to walk - it takes around half-an-hour to get to the top if you are fit enough to even try it!!

Bridport has everything one needs from a town - including many fine restaurants, some great pubs and cafes, a myriad of shops and boutiques, two health food stores, a post office, and some highly reputable schools. There is even a mini-Waitrose conveniently located on West Street, right in town! There are also some great events to enjoy - including the Bridport Literary Festival, the Bridport Open Studios (for artists), the Food Festival, and the Bridport Carnival. The town is home to many cultural facilities - an arts centre, library, museum and a cinema. Famously the Bridport Prize - Short Story and Poetry Competition - is based here. One of the most prestigious literary competitions of its kind - with entries flying in from all over the world!

Above all, the single most attractive feature of this lively town is its sense of community. It makes you feel welcome immediately, whether you be a visitor or a resident. Due to its proximity to the coast and the stunning West Dorset countryside there are many second-home owners in the area. This, however, does not detract from its appeal or overall sense of familiarity. It is a joyful and colourful place to call home!
