Moving to Dorchester ?
Welcome to the historic market town of Dorchester, the county town of Dorest in south England! The area is steeped in rich history, dating back to prehistoric times. Maiden Castle is an Iron Age hill fort just 2.5kms from Dorchester - It is thought to have been one of the most important and powerful settlements in pre-Roman Britain, with tribes inhabiting the area since 4000BC. At the time of the arrival of the Romans to the area, in 43AD, it was very likely that it was the Durotrigues who were living around, and on, Maiden Castle - They were one of the Celtic tribes living in the area at that time. By 70AD the Romans had defeated all of the local tribes and had taken over Dorchester, which they named Durnovaria. It was at this time that Dorchester started to become a town - and one of significant importance as a market centre for the surrounding locals and countryside. Many Roman features and ruins can still be seen in the town today - including Roman townhouse ruins, and part of the original wall that would have surrounded Dorchester. There is so much more history to regale but it would take pages! Suffice to say, it is an extremely historical area with many interesting places to visit and explore!
Dorchester is a bustling and vibrant town. It has seen a steady growth over the past few years, especially with the constuction of Poundbury, an experimental extension on the outskirst of the town. It was built on land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall and Prince Charles has taken a great role in the development and planning of the area. It is home to some fabulous boutique style shops, cafes, and a pub - and some rather interesting buildings! It also hosts a market on the first Saturday of each month. Talking of markets there are many to enjoy in Dorchester! The main market is held every Wednesday, with a car boot sale on Sunday. Every Friday a market is held in the Corn Exchange - and since 2007 the town has hosted a French Market on the August Bank Holiday. This has proved to highly successful bringing in visitors and locals alike, eager to sample French cheeses, wines, breads, olives, and more!
The area is very beautiful with rolling hills, farmland, and woodland. One can clearly see the inspiration for the novels and poetry of Thomas Hardy! Hardy was born in a hamlet just outside Dorchester, his heart is buried in Stinsford Church. The National Trusts owns both the homes in which this Dorset national treasure was born and lived, and where he wrote many of his wonderful novels and much of his poetry.
Dorchester has much to offer people from all walks of life. Home to some fantastic restaurants, cafes, pubs, an exciting range of high-street shops, and boutiques - It also has some great schools and a plethora of cultural venues. Dorchester has a fair number of museums, including the Keep Military Museum, Dinosaur Museum, Teddy Bear Museum, Terracotta Warriors Museum - and more! Events are held year-round - There is always something to going on! All in all, a great place to call home!
