Welcome to Ferndown! Ferndown is the County of Dorset's largest inland town, and is the largest town in East Dorset. It sits on the edge of the New Forest and is surrounded by pretty open countryside and woodlands. Close by are the larger coastal towns of Bournemouth and Poole - making Ferndown an ideal dormitory town from which to commute to work. The town was originally known as Fern Down, and did not become a one-word town until 1925. The growth and establishment of commercial life in Ferndown was largely due to a family from Dundee, the Stewarts, who came to the area in 1859 seeking a more clement climate to grow and nurture delicate plants. Their business flourished, no pun intended, and thus the town started to boom - or should that be, bloom...

The town still has a very village-y feel to it, and certainly has a great community spirit. It is however a very busy town with many fantastic amenities - including a large shopping complex, sports centre - and two golf clubs! One of Ferndown's most famous attractions is its large Tesco supermarket! Slightly incongruous, I know! But it has become a well-known Dorset feature over the years as it is located on one of the most well-used Dorset bus routes. At a Civic Service the Minister once quipped that BT, in Ferndown, did not stand for British Telecom, but, Before Tesco!

Ferndown has a number of great restaurants, cafes and bars, shops and boutiques. It is also home to the Barrington Theatre, which has 250 seats and offers both professional and amateur shows and plays. It also offers activities and facilities to suit all tastes and ages - from rock concerts to ballet. It is also home to a 60-seat restaurant, meeting and conference rooms, and a friendly bar. The nearby towns of Bournemouth and Poole have some fantastic facilities, as well as some brilliant educational centres and work opportunities. And of course Bournemouth Airport is a mere stone's throw away -for those who wish to escape from time to time!
