Moving to Lyme Regis ?

Welcome to Lyme Regis! Nicknamed "The Pearl of Dorset", it is very easy to see why! Lyme Regis is an ancient port located in West Dorset, on the border of Devon. The town lies in Lyme Bay situated on the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site, and is renowned for the fossils that can be found in the cliffs and beaches. It is really very idyllic, and a fabulous place to explore and fossil hunt. Lyme Regis and the surrounding area has also provided creative inspiration for a great number of famous people - including Jane Austen, who featured the harbour wall, "The Cobb" in her novel 'Persuasion'. The writer, John Fowles, moved to Lyme Regis in 1968 and remained there until he died in 2005. It was here that he penned four of his great novels and short story collections.

The town has a rich history with its earliest recording being in 774AD. It was in the 13th century that it established itself as one of the most important British ports. However the port's most influential and prosperous period was from the 16th century until the end of the 18th century, and incredibly until 1780 it was a larger port than Liverpool! Its location on the south coast meant that it was very convenient for trade with France. It started to decline in the 19th century, as it simply could not handle the rapid increase in ship sizes.

Lyme Regis has many other attractions aside from "The Cobb" and its beaches and cliffs. The watermill, which dates back from 1340, has been restored to full working order. It produces flour, which is used in the mill's bakery and also sold in its shop. The Lyme Regis Museum is a wonderful place to visit if you are interested in knowing more about the fabulous palaeontological and geological history of the area. Also on display is a splendid collection of local artefacts and memorabilia. The Three Cups Hotel (how awesome is the name!) has some impressive associations with famous historical and literary characters, including Alfred Lord Tennyson, J.R.R Tolkein, Hilaire Belloc, and more!

There are a number of annual events, including the Lyme Regis Carnival and Regatta, the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival, and the annual bonfire night on the beach. The town has some great restaurants, many, of course, offering locally produced seafood! Delicious! Also on offer are tearooms and a selection of shops and convenience stores.

Lyme Regis is a fantastic town in which to live, work and play! If you love the beach and all that living on the coast has to offer then this is the place for you! The surrounding area is beautiful with many pretty neighbouring villages to explore - and many quaint pubs to enjoy! And of course there is the spectacular Jurassic Coastline to roam along. Dorset is a very special county for sure - and Lyme Regis really is one of its gems!
