Moving to Portland ?
Welcome to the Isle of Portland, situated in South Dorset! It is not actually really an island as it is connected to the mainland by a long narrow causeway, which starts from Chesil Beach, and is therefore known as a 'tied' island. It is a rather massive lump of limestone jutting out of the sea! It is 6km long and 2.4km wide and rises to a maximum height of 400 feet above sea level, at the north end of the "island". The busy seaside town of Weymouth lies 8km away at the other end of the causeway - with Chesil Beach stretching for 29km to the west.
Portland is probably most famous for its 'Portland Stone' - which has been used extensively throughout Britain as a building stone - most notably for St.Paul's Cathedral and Buckingham Palace, and in the re-building of London after the Great Fire in the 17th century. And not only famous buildings in the British Isles but overseas too - It was used in the building of the United Nations Headquarters in New York! It also holds worldwide renown for being one of the largest man-made harbours in the world, and as one of the most important naval bases in the UK for 100 years following completion of the harbour in 1872.
Portland's red and white lighthouse standing proudly on Portland Bill (the southern tip of the island) is a very well known and much photographed feature on the island - It is also a very important landmark for passing ships. The seas around Portland are notoriously treacherous and have claimed many a ship throughout the centuries.
Portland has not always had the greatest of reputations. Thomas Hardy dubbed the island, 'The Isle of Slinger's' due to its inhospitable and aggressive inhabitants, Portlanders, throwing stones to keep strangers away! In recent years it has had a bit of a facelift and has subsequently become a much more attractive and sought after place to live. Architecturally, Portland, is a national treasure with several areas having been designated as Conservation Areas. Parts of the island date back several hundred years, which give Portland an overall unique and distinct character.
Portland itself has everything one could possibly need, or want, in way of culture, shops, schools, leisure and sports facilities and more. Being located on the south coast also means that it has, along with the rest of the south coast, the sunniest climate in the UK! If you love water sports, or just living near the coast, then this is the place for you! The WPNSA (Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy) was constucted as a sailing centre for the UK and are hosting the sailing events at the 2012 Olympic Games! An advantageous time to be living in the area! All in all, Portland is a fabulous place to call home.
