Moving to Shaftesbury ?
Shaftesbury is a town in Dorset, in the idyllic Blackmore Vale. It is actually one of the highest and oldest towns in the Britain! It is also one of Dorset's prettiest towns with a unique and antiquated charm. Gold Hill, a steep cobbled street in Shaftesbury, made the town famous by appearing in a Hovis Bread advertisement directed by Sir Ridley Scott. It ran from 1973 well into the 1980s. One of Britain's most loved commercials of all time! You do know it - It was the one with the boy on the bike...! Shaftesbury has also appeared on the cover of many a book about Dorset and rural England. It is easy to see why! Gold Hill is ridiculously picturesque and reminiscent of another era - with its rows of chocolate box thatched cottages and spectacular uninterrupted views of the countryside all around. It appeared in Thomas Hardy novels, as Shaston - and also featured in the film version of 'Far From the Madding Crowd'.
The area is rich in history - dating back thousands of years and I could easily wax lyrical about that for pages! Suffice to say it is a fascinating involved tale of historical drama that spans the centuries! I will, however, give you a taster! - One of its most notable features is the original medieval Abbey precinct wall - beyond which lay one of England's largest, and the wealthiest, Benedictine nunneries. Founded in 888AD by King Alfred for his daughter, Ethelburga, it brought prosperity and growth to the town and surrounding area, until the Dissolution under the reign of King Henry VIII. The Abbey Museum and Garden is situated on the site of the nunnery and is home to many relics and artefacts from that time - including a fabulous Anglo-Saxon herb collection. It is a fascinating museum and the gardens are wonderful.
The town has everything one needs in way of high street shops, banks, cafes, entertainment centres, and is home to some great restaurants and pubs. As its primary trade is tourism, one can also find a variety of independent shops selling gifts and handcrafted goods. There are two primary schools to choose from, and a secondary school. Nearby is St.Mary's Shaftesbury, a Catholic girls boarding and day school.
What makes the town even more special, aside from its buildings and general quaintness, is its surrounding countryside and views. From certain points in the town it is possible to see as far as Glastonbury Tor, a good 25 miles away! The Blackmore Vale is a beautiful part of the Stour Valley with many interesting villages to explore and some lovely well marked trails to ramble along. Great pubs too! Shaftesbury has a village feel to it - with a strong sense of community. There are many clubs and activities to join and participate in, for all ages. No reason to get bored here! It would be a wonderful place to call home, and to be able to fully enjoy and appreciate all that Shaftesbury, and the surrounding area, has to offer.
