Welcome to Sherborne! Sherborne is an historical, and very pretty, market town in northwest Dorset. Reckoned by many to be one of the most beautiful towns in England it certainly does have an abundance of impressive features - not least its medieval and Georgian architecture, its spectacular abbey, its manor house and no less than two castles!! Many of the older buildings, including the abbey, were built using ochre-coloured hamstone - stone quarried from Ham Hill in Hampshire - very distinctive in its golden colour and texture, it certainly adds to the appeal and warmth of old town Sherborne. The town is also home to one of the most famous independent schools in the world - Sherborne School - which can boast Jeremy Irons, John le Carre, and Chris Martin among its most notable 'old boys'. The castle ruins of Sherborne 'old' castle date back to the 12th century, while Sherborne 'new' Castle was built by Sir Walter Raleigh, and is actually a 16th century mansion. Sherborne New Castle now belongs to the Wingfield Digby family - the gardens are open to the public for most of the year, and the house is open to the public on Saturdays. It is a fantastic venue for many local events - including concerts and firework displays.

Sherborne Abbey, was originally constructed in 705AD as a Saxon Cathedral. In 998 Bishop Wulfsige III established it as a Benedictine abbey, and served as the abbey's first Bishop. The bishopric of Sherborne was transferred to Old Sarum, in Wiltshire, in 1075 and after that it remained as a Benedictine Abbey until the Dissolution of Monasteries in 1539. It was then sold to the people of Sherborne to be their Parish Church. Each year, since 2000, a festival has been held at the Abbey. The festival has grown to become an important classical music event and is a must for all music lovers! The Abbey is an incredibly beautiful structure and more than worth a visit.

Sherborne is a busy town, with a reputation for being an important town in the region for Art and Antique dealers. It has many fine restaurants, pubs, cafes, and tearooms - alongside a great shopping centre.
