Moving to Wareham ?
Wareham is a riverside walled market town in the County of Dorset with a rich and involved history spanning the centuries as far back as 9000BC! Welcome! Undeniably picturesque the town is situated on a low dry island that lies between the marshy plains of the Rivers Frome and Piddle. It sits at the entrance to the Isle of Purbeck, which is not actually an island, but a sixty square mile peninsula jutting out into the English Channel. Until the Middle Ages Wareham was the most important port in the area, but it was around this time that the natural harbour began to silt up and Poole took over as the main port. Wareham quay is a delightful place to visit - to look at all the boats, and feed the ducks, enjoy a pint at the pub, have a picnic, or wander along the path that meanders along the riverside.
Due to a fire that swept through and destroyed most of the town, in 1762, most of the architecture to be seen is Georgian - and built using red brick and Portland limestone. It really is very pretty with much to see and do! The earth ramparts built by Alfred the Great can still be seen surrounding the old town, and there is the medieval church of St Mary to visit - It is a lovely town to explore slowly and thoroughly, there are many hidden treasures to be found in way of buildings and old lanes.
Wareham has a great selection of shops and some fabulous restaurants, cafes, and pubs. There are also some interesting galleries to check out. The town is also home to a museum, a cinema, and a football team - the Wareham Rangers - and more! A market takes place every Thursday and Saturday - excellent to buy locally sourced produce and handcrafted gifts and trinkets. The annual carnival is held in July and boasts a parade, fireworks and music by the Quay. Another festival also held in the summer is a music festival with bands playing at venues all over town.
The area surrounding Wareham is truly splendid - and for those who like hiking, mountain-biking, horse-riding, exploring, fossil hunting - then this area is for you! Wareham Forest is a large coniferous plantation and is used recreationally by many locals and visitors alike. The Purbeck Hills are an impressive ridge of chalk downs - many trails wind their way along and through these downs. Some areas are closed to the public due to their being used as a firing range by the army - It is possible, frequently, to hear the 'BOOMS' of the practice. Another ancient wonder located nearby is Corfe Castle, built by William the Conqueror and haunted by the White Lady! There are also some wonderful beaches to enjoy - including the beaches at Studland and Swanage - and many coastal paths to ramble along.
It is a fantastic area! One would be hard pushed to get bored! Wareham has much to offer for all ages and all tastes - and the surrounding area holds a colourful myriad of opportunity for fun and pleasure! Enjoy!
