Moving to Southend on sea?

Southend on Sea has one of the most prosaic names in England: it was originally the south end of the village of Prittlewell in Essex. Prittlewell was first settled around Prittle Book by hunter gatherers during the Stone Age, around ten thousand years ago. Due to its position on the southeast coast of Britain, it was on the front line for invading forces: first the Romans, who built villas and paved roads; later the Saxons, who afforded the area high status and left many rich burial mounds to honour their dead warriors. The first Christian church was built in the seventh century: although it has been rebuilt several times, St Mary’s still retains a small arch from the period, with Roman tiles that date from even earlier laid on top of it.

The Danes invaded in the tenth century and Baron Sweyne was granted feudal powers by William the Conqueror after the Norman invasion of 1066. The fishing settlement that grew up at this time was the forerunner of Southend – this has, of course, long since swallowed the original village. Prittlewell Priory and all the land around it was seized by Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The area languished until the Georgian era, when Southend became a popular seaside resort for the upper classes. The first pier was built in 1830 but it was the construction of the railway in the late nineteenth century that really opened the town up to mass tourism and shed its over privileged image. During the twentieth century it became famous for its lively music hall scene – many classic English comedians including Laurel and Hardy performed here. Today it remains one of Essex’s premier resorts, with vibrant nightlife and excellent theatres as well as fantastic family attractions.

Southend has one of the best climates in the UK: warm damp winters and hot summers, with temperatures reaching as high as 35°C on occasion. Not surprisingly, the seafront is one of the major draws here: long and golden, with glowingly gorgeous sunsets, it’s perfect for swimmers. Surfers and windsurfers also enjoy the waves here. The pier – which has burned down and been rebuilt better than before several times in its history – is truly iconic, the longest in the world at 1.34 miles. In fact, you can take a train along it if the idea of walking it is just too exhausting. At the shore end is a theme park, Adventure Island, which features four roller coasters including Rage, a twisting pink and yellow monstrosity with three different inversions.

As fits a resort, Southend has a number of events in summer. In May, Festival of the Air is one of Europe’s biggest free air shows, with high speed military jets and sports aerobatics displays over the seafront. Southend Carnival is held every August, and the illuminations are lit at this time. In keeping with its theatrical history, there are still three thriving theatres. Cliffs Pavilion hosts major concerts, Palace Theatre is an Edwardian variety theatre that now hosts quality repertory and the New Empire is left to local amateur groups. The electronic music scene was pioneered here; the best place to catch underground gigs is the Royal Hotel – or try Sunrooms for all kinds of alternative music. While you’re in town, don’t forget to eat the local speciality – cockles.
