Moving to Gloucestershire and Glos?

Thanks to novels such as Laurie Lee’s Cider With Rosie, Gloucestershire has rather a bucolic reputation. In large part, this is deserved: it is a heavily rural county with an emphasis on activities such as hunting, fishing and cheese rolling (seriously – there is an annual cheese rolling competition at Cooper’s Hill) and a strong agricultural sector. That’s not the full story, however.

Inhabited since 8000 B.C., when people started to mine extensively for coal here, the area was heavily colonised by the Romans, who built a large settlement at Cirencester, or Corinium Dobunnorum, as it was then called. By the late 2nd century it was the second largest city in Britain, fuelled by a thriving wool trade. After the Romans left the Saxons used their amphitheatre as a palace but Gloucester became more important, its castle frequently a royal residence for the Mercian kings. After the Norman Conquest a number of important monasteries were built. Tewkesbury was the site of a vicious battle during the Wars of the Roses and the whole county suffered during the Dissolution of the Monasteries and again a century later while the Civil War was raging. Since then, life has been fairly peaceful, although in 2007 the county was badly hit by floods which left large swathes of the population without running water.

The ancient centre of Gloucester was laid out during the reign of Ethelweda in late Saxon times but sadly none of the buildings survive in their entirety. Gloucester Cathedral originates in the foundation of an abbey dedicated to Saint Peter in 681 and still retains the Norman prior’s chapel; as it is one of the few tall buildings in the city it dominates the skyline. St Michael Church is said to have been built at the same time as the abbey, and St Mary de Lode is a Norman church built over a Roman temple. The New Inn was built in 1450 for pilgrims, a timbered house with large external galleries. There are many medieval and Tudor buildings around the town. Since the 18th century the Three Choirs Festival has been held here every three years. The Gloucester International Rhythm and Blues Festival takes place every August. At other times of year, head to the Guildhall to see what’s on.

Tewkesbury is best known for its Abbey, a fine Norman Abbey with a wonderful Romanesque arch that was saved from the Dissolution of the Monasteries by the townspeople, who bought it to be their local church. It also boasts Gloucestershire’s oldest pub, the Black Bear, which dates from 1308. The Roses Theatre is an arthouse cinema and comedy venue. In Cirencester, Corinium museum contains mosaics and other Roman treasures and parts of the Roman amphitheatre can be seen. Sadly, most of the Abbey was destroyed under orders from Henry VIII and only the Norman Arch remains. Other places to see include the Church of St John the Baptist, renowned for its perpendicular porch and fan vaults, and Cirencester House, which has one of the finest landscape gardens in England.

Outdoors enthusiasts will want to head to the Forest of Dean, one of the few surviving ancient woodlands in England and a great place to go rambling. Berkeley Castle, built in 1154, combines Norman austerity with gorgeous Elizabethan terraced gardens. Badminton House is the home of the Badminton horse trials and strongly linked to two hunts: the Beaufort and the Quorn. Pork lovers should look out for sausages, bacon and other produce made with the Gloucestershire Old Spot pig, said to be one of the most delicious in the world.
