Moving to Filton ?
The town of Filton is situated in South Gloucestershire in the beautiful South West of England. It is actually located just on the northern outskirts of Bristol hence the reason for it having the Bristol postal codes, BS27 and BS34. As with much of this area Filton is steeped in history. The church in Filton, St.Peter's Church, dates back to the 12th century, and is a grade ll listed building. The town is blessed with having large open areas, including several playing fields, a golf course, and of course the large airfield, Bristol-Filton. The town is run by a parish council, which currently has thirteen councillors.
The airfield is probably best known for being the place where British-built Concordes took their first flights using the main Filton runway. In 2003 Concorde 216 took the final ever Concorde flight from Heathrow, landing in Filton where it remains and is maintained as a visitor attraction. Sadly the airfield is set to close in late 2012. This has inevitably created a surge of action and attention - and a local campaign was set in motion, 'Save Filton Airfield', to oppose the decision. However, despite the imminent closure of the airfield it has been decided that the Great Western Air Ambulance is to remain at Filton.
Sixty years agao the 'Filton Concert Brass' band was formed - It is still going strong and is currently Bristol's highest-placed brass band! The town is also home to Filton College - a highly acclaimed learning centre that offers education to students aged fourteen and over. Students can study an exciting range of A levels and there is also an outstanding selection of Arts programmes. On offer also is a wide range of skills provision training, including hairdressing and beauty therapy, ITC, animal management, construction, and much, much more! The Bristol Academy of Sport is a highly acclaimed sports programme that offers training and education for those who want to study and play sport at the same time.
There are a variety of good restaurants located in Filton - including the inevitable Mcdonalds - but it is also possible to get a great Indian at the Panahar restaurant, or go to Dolphins Fish Bar for some delicious fish and chips! Filton is home to The Air Balloon pub - A rather wonderful name and well worth a visit for some fine pub food and a good range of beverages.
Due to its proximity to the City of Bristol, railways lines, and main motorway arteries, Filton is considered to be a very desirable place to live. It has some major centres of employment near by, such as the MOD and BAE Systems, and of course there is a plethora of opportunity in the City of Bristol. Being so close to the city means it has the advantage of being able to readily enjoy all the facilities, activities and events that Bristol has to offer - which are many! All in all, a great place to call home!
