Moving to Kingswood ?

Kingswood was, back in the 18th Century, a small coal-mining village! Hard to believe that now! Although it does still affect residents from time to time with local gardens collapsing into the buried mines! Located in the picturesque unitary district of South Gloucestershire, in South West England, it is now an urban area bordering the City of Bristol - the city centre is a mere 4 miles away! It is considered by many to be a suburb of the city, but in fact it has always been just outside the city's border, although its postal address is, 'Kingswood, Bristol'. The A420 runs through the area and serves not only as the main connecting route for Bristol and Chippenham, but also as Kingswood's high street.

The area has a rich history - especially in coal mining and for religious reasons, too. George Whitefield was an English Anglican priest who was famous for his open-air preaching methods - He was origianlly from the Gloucester area and spent much time preaching to the coal miners who were based around Kingswood in the 18th Century. He greatly influenced John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, and he and Whitefield, along with their associates, constructed a number of chapels and schools in the area - These are considered to be a leading factor in the growth and success of Kingswood. The well known Whitefield Tabernacle was also constructed in Kingswood - the name is actually referring to the two buildings in which the church met.

Kingswood has a number of Grade I and Grade II listed buildings making it actually a rather pretty place. It has all the facilities and amenities that you could possibly want or need, including some great restaurants, pubs, nighttime venues and local shops. It is also home to some fascinating historical attractions, including the Kingswood Heritage Museum. The museum is the original site for William Champion's 18th Century brass works. It was there that he started Europe's first commerical production of zinc. The site represents an important and deserved milestone in industrial history. The museum is a fascinating place providing fabulous historical information and some highly interesting displays of local industury and soical history of the area. There are also the beautiful gardens to explore - the most prominent features being a Palladian house and a water feature with a thirty-foot statue of Neptune! A great day out for all of the family!

Being so close to the centre of Bristol also means that residents can enjoy and make full use of all that the city has to offer. There is a plethora of employment opportunities with easy commuting access for Kingswood's surrounding towns and cities. The area is home to a number of good schools and childcare facilities making it a great place to start and raise a family. There is also the added bonus of having both the Cotswold Hill's and the coast all within arm's reach! All in all a great place to live!
