Moving to Stoke Gifford ?

Stoke Gifford is a large village situated in the beautiful South Gloucestershire in the South West of England. Being located in the northern suburbs of Bristol makes it an ideal place from which to commute into the city - hence its reputation as being a dormitory, or commuter, village. This simply means that it is a place in which people live but work elsewhere, normally in the city. The Bristol Ring Road lies just to the south of Stoke Gifford and the village is also home to the Bristol Parkway railway station. The railway station was built in the 1970s and is located in Stoke Gifford for a couple of reasons - It has easy access to both the M4 and M5, and it provides a shorter train route to London.

This all makes Stoke Gifford sound like a rather soulless place! This, however, is far from the truth. The village is rich in history and dates back as far as 1085AD - with entries in the Doomsday Book. In 1553 the Dower House (a Manor house) was built, by Sir Richard Berkley - This building, along with other buildings that were constructed later, formed what became known as Pur Down Hospital, and for a while was the Burden Neurological Institute. It first started being used as a hospital in the early 1900s and stopped being such in 1985 when it was closed and sold. It has since been converted into residential flats - a rather grand and beautiful place to live!

Since 1884 Stoke Gifford has had a civil parish council - This also happens to be the year parish councils were first created, formed at a time when the differences between Church and the State meant little to the local folk. The parish currently has twelve councillors all of whom are dedicated to improving the safety, well being, community spirit and leisure of the residents of Stoke Gifford, Harry Stoke, Little Stoke and Stoke Park. They organise fantastic events designed to bring the parish community together. ST.Michael's Church, originating from the fourteenth century, is the parish church and is an integral part of the village - it is a very important part of daily life to many of the parish residents and remains very influential in the daily running of the village. It hosts various groups and activities - including a parenting course providing information and advice on how to be a good parent.

The area has some major areas of employment - these include the University of West England, Hewlett Packard, the MOD and Friends Life. Having the City of Bristol literally on its doorstep means that employment opportunities here are high and varied, and with the added bonus of having the railway line and the easy access to the motorways all in all make Stoke Gifford a highly desirable place to live! South Gloucestershire itself is a very beautiful area with many fascinating historical sites. It is a wonderful place to explore and to live.
