Moving to Hampshire?
The birthplace of Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, Hampshire is quintessentially English. As such, it has absorbed more of the country’s numerous invasions than almost anywhere else. First settled during the Neolithic era, when tribes lived in hilltop settlements, farming the valleys below, under the Celts the county became part of a region known as Gwent. It was one of the first parts of Britain to fall to the Romans, who established the towns of Winchester and Silchester. The Jutes started to settle the south of the county in 495 but were quickly superseded by the Saxons, who created their first kingdom here. Later, Hampshire became the centre of the Kingdom of Wessex, ruled over by King Alfred in the ninth century. Winchester was the capital of Wessex and later of England until the arrival of William I in 1066.
After the Norman Conquest, the new monarchy established the New Forest as their hunting forest. The ports at Portsmouth and Southampton grew in importance, fuelled by trade with the continent, wool and cloth manufacture in the county, and the fishing industry, and a shipbuilding industry was established. A series of castles, most notablky Hurst Castle, were built over the centuries to protect them and they have remained important even as their rivals declines. Both the Mayflower and the Titanic set sail from Southampton. Today, Hampshire is one of the most prosperous counties in the UK and attracts tourists from all over the world.
Most of them head straight to Winchester, renowned for its stunning cathedral, the longest in Europe. Originally built in 1079, it contains fine architecture from the 11th to 17th centuries. Many Saxon kings are buried there, as is Jane Austen. Cathedral Close beside it houses several ancient homes, including the 13th century Deanery and the Pilgrims Hall, the earliest extant hammer-beamed building in England. There are two castles in Winchester: Wolvesey Castle, built in 1110; and Winchester Castle, famous for its Great Hall, in which hangs King Arthur’s Round Table. The magnificent buildings of Winchester College mostly date from the school’s founding in 1382: it was founded by William of Wykeham to educate poor boys but has become one of the most exclusive schools in the country.
In common with most of the South Coast, Hampshire has a mild climate, protected from the Atlantic storms that are found further west with more sunshine, less rain and higher temperatures than the rest of the UK. This makes it an ideal location for leisure sports, and there is a wide choice available. The sailing here is excellent, with a large number of clubs and classes. Southampton Boat Show attracts visitors from throughout the country. Up on the South Downs, paragliding is a popular activity – if you prefer to remain earthbound it’s great for walking too. And the New Forest offers wonderful riding through its wooded trails, a mosaic of heathland, grassland, coniferous and deciduous woodland habitats that host diverse wildlife. Look out for the 6,500 strong herd of red deer which roams free here.
As for spectator sports, cricket was developed here and is still very popular, whether it is a Sunday game on a shady village green, or a more serious County match. Thruxton Circuit is Hampshire’s premier motor racing course, and the National Motor Museum is found in the New Forest. Farnborough Airshow is another fantastic annual spectacle.
