Moving to Leicestershire?

Leicestershire offers a series of fascinating juxtapositions: the birthplace of modern fox hunting that also inspired Sue Townsend to create her iconic character Adrian Mole, a disaffected teenager who thinks he’s an intellectual; the place that gave us the pork pie, the most English food imaginable, which now has one of the most thriving Asian communities in the country; a centre of engineering innovation that is home to prized rare breeds of sheep and cattle. Like most of England, it has been influenced by numerous cultures from the Celtic Corieltauvi tribe onwards, which may explain the apparently conflicting elements of its character. Leicestershire has a temperate climate, with moderate rainfall.

Supposedly founded by King Leir, a mythical British leader, Leicester was an important military outpost in Roman times. Ancient Roman pavements and baths can still be seen at the Jewry Wall and a number of Roman artefacts are held at the Jewry Wall Museum. Its fate under the Saxons is unrecorded but it became important again when the Danes captured it, rising to be one of the Five Burghs under Danelaw. The first English Parliament was held at Leicester Castle in 1265. Growing steadily as a market town throughout the Middle Ages, Leicester was sacked by Royalist Forces during the Civil War. The town really came into itself during the Industrial Revolution, when a newly constructed rail and canal network fuelled the engineering, shoe making and hosiery manufactories.

Leicester Castle, now ruined, is a good place to start a tour of the city. The Cathedral used to be the Church of St Martins but was re-consecrated in 1927 after Leicester was granted City status. Richard III’s tomb is in the central nave, although his body is not there: buried at nearby Greyfriars Church, it is said to have been exhumed and flung into the River Soar on Henry VII’s orders. The city has a vibrant arts scene: there are five theatres including Curve, which was designed by Rafael Vinoly, and a wealth of music venues. The Summer Sundae Festival runs in conjunction with the Summer Sundae Fringe Festival, thus giving both international and local artists a stage. The National Space Centre is based at Leicester University. As well as pork pies, Leicester is the home of Walkers Crisps – that combined with the delicious curries available all over the city means it’s not a good place to start a diet! The county also produces Red Leicester and Stilton cheeses.

Belvoir Castle is the home of the Duke of Rutland. Originally a Norman keep, it was torn down several times over the centuries: today it’s a Gothic castle designed by James Wyatt with incredibly lavish staterooms. There is also a range of outdoor activities such as shooting, fishing, quad biking and four-by-four driving. Ashby de la Zouch Castle was begun by a Norman baron and has been extended many times over the intervening centuries. Watermead Country Park is a network of artificial lakes where you can do bird watching, fishing and water sports.
