Moving to Barking?

Conveniently situated 9 miles East of London, Barking, still retains the feel of being a town in its own right, despite being wedged between other conurbations, Ilford being the closest. Easily accessed by train via the District Line and C2C Services from Central London ( a Barking DLR branch will follow as part of the London Riverside Development Scheme), as well as the A406 North Circular and A13, it's a busy, active community, and a transport hub. Part of the borough of Barking and Dagenham, established in 1931, its origins lie primarily in fishing and ship refurbishment (the River Roding forms the town's Western Boundary) in older times. These industries like many of those from the past are long gone however and more recently the Ford Car plant in Dagenham has been a source of local employment.

The town centre, characterised by the old Barking town hall is currently in line for an overdue face-lift, including a new 'terrazzo' style central square feature, the aim being to establish high-quality retail outlets, a business centre and additional quality housing for locals and newcomers to the area. A lot of the current housing is spread out and largely away from the mainly commercial high street in locations such as the Ilford road and other links to nearby districts. The new development plans however are incorporating new and affordable apartment blocks right in the middle of town and these are springing up rapidly as the regeneration gathers speed. This can only benefit a town centre which has been crying out for this kind of care and attention.

From a retail standpoint, the old town centre offers an acceptably diverse range of standard high street stores, within easy reach of the station and on user-friendly pedestrianised streets, not to mention restaurants ( Nando's near the station is a winner), bars and fast-food a plenty. For those requiring a greater range, both Lakeside Shopping Centre, a twenty minute drive East along the A13 and Bluewater , a forty five minute excursion into Kent, offer vast choice, with food, shopping and cinema facilities available at both. Obviously, fifteen minutes west along the A13 sits Central London itself, so everything you could need is very accessible.

Barking also has a fine sporting heritage, two of its most famous sons being Chelsea's John Terry and England legend Bobby Moore, in fact Barking Abbey secondary school is listed as a specialist sports college, one of the best in the area and the recipient of numerous government awards over the years. For spectators of lower level football, Barking FC plays in the town. Barking’s heritage of producing stars isn't just limited to sport however, musician Billy Bragg and U2 guitarist The Edge both list the town as their place of birth.

Historical Place of Interest: The ruins of Barking Abbey, home to among others William the Conqueror in 1066.
