Moving to Barnet?
Situated about 10 miles north-west of Central London; Barnet, specifically
High Barnet( due to the somewhat elevated position it enjoys) represents the
most northerly outpost on the Northern Line, as well as being comprehensively
serviced by numerous bus routes into London and the surrounding area. Formerly
a civil parish of Hertfordshire Chipping Barnet officially became a London
Borough in 1965, and is one of several small town centres in the larger Barnet
area ( Finchley and Cricklewood being a couple of others). Reached by road
most easily by the A406 North Circular, not to mention a more direct route
into Central London via the A1.
Like many similar towns its primary focus is its High Street, a busy
thoroughfare, with all that you’d expect from a suburban shopping street, and
conveniently close to the bus terminus. Also, shopping can be found in the
Spires shopping centre, containing traditional high- street stores, a Waitrose,
and a number of coffee outlets and eating places. Also locally can be found
numerous public houses and French, Chinese and Indian cuisine to name but a
few .If, however you are looking for greater scale and variety, Brent Cross
shopping centre is very close at hand and offers everything that a modern
custom –built mall should, large department stores etc.
Other facilities nearby include Barnet General Hospital, Barnet College
(whose main campus is in High Barnet), as well as a host of primary and
secondary schools in the area, including some independent options. For leisure
lovers there is an Odeon Cinema in High Barnet and also Barnet FC, play
football at the nearby Underhill stadium. Also in High Barnet there is a
museum, detailing the area’s considerable historical past, notably the site of
the Battle of Barnet in 1471, as well as being the home of an ancient horse
fair, dating back to the time of Queen Elizabeth 1 in the 16th Century. St John
the Baptist Church, standing in the middle of the town, completes the picture,
having stood in its place since around 1400.
New developments coming in the area are being spearheaded by the Barnet
Beat music weekend, held early in March each year, giving youngsters the
opportunity to discover what is on offer in the area in the field of the arts,
and is run by local the local council and the College. The aim presumably being
to add to the list of the area’s famous products, the late comedian Spike
Milligan and Spice Girl Emma Bunton springing most readily to mind, as well as
Samuel Pepys and Kingsley Amis from the literary world.
Historical Place to Visit: St John the Baptist Church, at the top of Barnet Hill.
