Moving to Belgravia?

Situated to the South-West of Buckingham Palace, Belgravia is and has always been one of the most desirable areas within The City of Westminster, having been first patronised by the Earl of Essex. Accessible readily from Sloane Square, Hyde Park Corner and Knightsbridge underground stops it is also close to Victoria, from where over ground train and inter-city busy services are regularly available.

The bulk of this delightful corner of central London is characterised by large, often white, stucco buildings (as a result of the influence of Italy on our Victorian predecessors), many of them now being used for diplomatic purposes (Belgravia and Eaton Squares being the best examples). Historically, many of the houses in Belgravia were originally stable buildings so there are still many mews type properties in the surrounding area too.

So, due largely to the nature of the inhabitants over time, this neighbourhood lacks the frantic day to day hustle of many of its busier and more commercially orientated neighbours such as the equally desirable Chelsea or Knightsbridge, home of Harrods amongst others. But their proximity adds to the already long list of reason s to reside here, for those in that fortunate position!

For shopping purposes, simply wander into Chelsea for a huge range of small boutiques and designer stores or alternatively, brave the crowds in Knightsbridge and visit Harrods and Harvey Nichols ( whose top floor champagne bar is popular with A-listers) Equally, if you’re looking for a restaurant or a cool bar you’d me much better to head out of Belgravia but if you are keen to stay The Boisdale on Ecclestone Street will cater for more traditional palates ( reputed to be a haven for Highland excellence)whereas for something more exotic , The Mango Tree is a well known Thai eatery located on Grosvenor place. The general theme though is one not have big city bustle more one of laid back civility, and that encapsulates what Belgravia is all about.

As you’d expect the list of Belgravia’s previous inhabitants reads like a who’s who of just about everything; Prime Ministers Neville Chamberlain and Stanley Baldwin head the list of politicians, whereas Chopin and Mozart cover the legendary musical angle. Sean Connery and Roger Moore making - up a double-act of acting former residents. A dizzying array indeed, and entirely consistent with the opulent aura this part of London projects. Establishment? definitely. Luxurious? for sure, but you simply will not find a more desirable part of central London to visit.

Historical Place of interest: Visit the impressive buildings of Belgravia Square itself.
