Moving to Bexley?
Sandwiched between Greenwich to the West and Dartford to the East, Bexley
strictly speaking is a large area of South East London within the borough of
the same name. The original part, Old Bexley or Bexley village is a more
traditional town, but as with many other similar towns has accumulated suburban
attachments (Albany Park and Bexley Heath being the most well known) This
suburban area is now the fulcrum of the borough rather than Old Bexley. All of
the above are serviced by Bexley Railway station which supports regular trains
into Central London; additionally there are regular bus services into London
also. By road, the whole area is sliced by the A2 trunk road from Kent which,
if followed will get you to Central London via the Blackwall Tunnel.
Originally part of Kent County Council, Bexley was incorporated into the
ever-growing Greater London monster in 1965, which itself took in many of the
metropolitan parts of the Home Counties. One notable incentive for living in
this area is that, subject to final approval, Bexley will be subject to only a
2% increase in Council Tax, the lowest for fifteen years!
Shopping is spread out around the suburban area, one option being the
Broadway Shopping Centre in Bexleyheath, offering a good range of shops, as
well as cafe’s and fast food outlets. Bluewater, one of the largest retail
developments in the UK is reasonably accessible and just a short trip back over
the Dartford Bridge, housing vast shopping options, restaurants and a large
cinema complex. Definitely worth a trip although weekends can be particularly
busy!
For eating purposes there is a wide choice in the area too, Ferrari’s on
Bexley High street has a great reputation as being a stylish Italian option and
would be a first port of call. For fans of French food, apparently the
Victorian Restaurant on Broadway, Bexleyheath ranks fairly high up the list
and incorporates one of the largest brass and copper collections in the
country! A little further afield, Le Dolomiti is a stylish fresh seafood
restaurant a short drive away near New Eltham and is the recipient of
consistently good reviews.
One of the main appeals of the Bexley area is the fact that it’s
location out with the main sprawl of London means there are large amounts of
open space, something of a rarity nowadays. In fact the council maintains over
100 parks in the area, large and small including the Erith Marshes down on the
River Thames.
Recreationally Bexley have football at a junior level with Bexley FC, as
well as Bexley Cricket Club, the boroughs only Premier League club, operating
in the Kent League. In nearby Sidcup there is a council run leisure centre with
swimming pool, gym and various classes available. Also, there is a membership
based David Lloyd facility nearby, offering much the same but at a premium.
Famous people from the Borough include Steve Backley, javelin Olympian and
also Kate Bush, renowned singer and songwriter born in Bexleyheath.
