Moving to Bloomsbury?

Officially part of the London Borough of Camden, Bloomsbury is found in the southern part of that area, close to both Holborn and Clerkenwell, and is a fashionable residential area, characterised by some truly gorgeous garden squares .It couldn’t really be more accessible either with London Underground options at Russell Square and Euston Square. The larger stations servicing over ground services such as Euston and Kings Cross are just north of Bloomsbury. The newly refurbished St Pancras International station gives you the option of a Euro star trip to Paris too. A huge amount of bus routes pass through here, and interestingly, Russell Square itself is one of London taxi drivers stopping points (food and rest) so there should be no shortage of availability in these parts.

Bloomsbury was first mentioned in 1086 in the Domesday Book when it was reputed to have vineyards and ‘wood for 100 pigs’. The major development of the squares that we see now didn’t really get underway until 1800 however, when Russell Square to the north of the district became its centre-piece.

Being much more of a residential refuge and seat of academia, it should be of no surprise that retail is not much of a factor in this neighbourhood. That however, should pose no problem given the close proximity of Tottenham Court Road (joining Oxford Street) which should fulfil all but the most demanding shopper’s requirements. There is one remaining feature dating back to the 1960’s in the form of Brunswick Centre, located between Brunswick Square and Russell Square. It isn’t the most attractive building, much like many from that era, but it did undergo major re-development in 2002 and now houses many well-known high street stores, a supermarket and the Renoir Cinema facility. Additionally it is home to some 500 residents, living in renovated apartments.

If you had to define Bloomsbury’s raison d-etre however you would have to say three words, Arts, medicine and education. The British Museum, first opened to the public in 1759 is in the heart of Bloomsbury and the list of notable educational establishments close at hand would run to huge length (The Senate House and University of London library coming readily to mind) Also in the area is the Charles Dickens museum, providing information on one of our greatest ever novelists, who lived in the area back in the nineteenth century.

Of great importance and recognised worldwide is Great Ormond Street hospital, located just off Queens Square, housing important clinics in the field of neurology also. The Royal Homeopathic Hospital is also found in Bloomsbury.

As well as Charles Dickens, many other influential people have called this delightful corner of Central London home. Charles Darwin lived there, as did Bob Marley and comedian Ricky Gervais in more recent years.
