Moving to Bow?
Located in the East End of London, Bow is a mainly residential area, seven or
so miles from the city centre. Originally part of the medieval borough of Stepney,
it was ultimately absorbed in to the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in 1965.
It’s easily accessed though via London Underground stations Mile End and Bow
road, with an additional DLR option at Bow Church. Bus services are also
plentiful as the area sits close to the junction of the A12 East Cross route
and the A11 Mile End Road, both busy arteries in and out of central London. The
main focus of Bow is the well known Bow Church, located near the bridge over
the River Lee. This bridge nowadays is in fact a four lane road, with the river
and approach to the Blackwall Tunnel beneath. The traditional High Street of
Bow has been fairly inactive for many years, with very functioning shops
lately.
Historically, the main activities in Bow have been in the 17th century;
the manufacture of porcelain and later on, the site of Bryant and May the match
manufacturers. Locomotive and carriage workshops have also been situated in
Bow, at one time the headquarters of the North London Railway.
Any shops that remain in the area are spread along Bow Road itself near the
exit from the underground station, but don’t expect a great range. There is a
post office a, couple of banks but very little in the way of high quality
shops, so you should plan to go elsewhere. There are a couple of traditional
pubs there though and the usual fast food restaurants, but nothing you’d call
glamorous.
Other facilities in the area include a library in Gladstone place and the
original Poplar town hall is also located on Bow road, bring still used for
births, deaths and marriage registration.
Bow however has played a significant part in Church history over the years
and in fact in the 16th century, wrong doers from the area were brought by cart
and burned at the stake in front of Bow Church, which is now located on an
island in the A11, as a result of all the infrastructure over the years. There
has been a church on this site for more than seven hundred years, all that
despite being bombed by the Germans in World War two and subsequently being
rebuilt. It is very much the definitive image of Bow as we know it today.
The area and indeed much of the East End are likely to benefit in the coming
years from the impact of the 2012 Olympics, which will mainly take place not
far down the River Lee from Bow at Hackney Marshes. A lot of the infrastructure
is already in place and you would think an event of this international scale
could only benefit the area.
Famous people from Bow include Sylvia Pankhurst, campaigner and suffragette.
Girls Aloud had a flat there as did Amy Winehouse. So, if you fancy bumping into
Cheryl or Nicola down your local pub you can use our website to find a Bow removals company
and move house as soon as possible.
