Moving to Brent?

With a curious motto of Forward Together, and being strictly Outer London, Brent is a large Borough to the North West of the city, bordering Harrow to the Northwest and Barnet to the North East. Its name is derived from the River Brent which flows through the borough and it was only relatively recently formed (1965) from two municipal Boroughs, Willesden and Wembley. It’s impossible to ignore the fact that at the most recent census in 2001, Brent had the highest proportion of population born outside the UK, somewhere in the region of half. Because Brent actually encompasses so many small centres, inevitably transport is readily available. Brent Cross has an underground station on the Northern Line, and there are other notable stops such as Wembley Park on the Jubilee and Metropolitan Lines (servicing the newly revamped Wembley Stadium). Bus services are plentiful and road routes include the A406 North Circular and the old A1 which offers a direct if busy link into the North side of Central London.

Brent Cross Shopping centre, just off the North Circular has been a drawing card for the area for a few years now, incorporating good shopping and restaurants in a contained site with ample parking. Not particularly modern now but nevertheless effective. Elsewhere in the area the North Circular is littered with modern out of town outlets, restaurants and cinemas, but the overall feeling is one lacking in character as much as what it offers in convenience. Sprawling industrial estates abound and you feel you are far from the charm and indeed history of Central London. Not to decry its worth though, because areas like Brent offer huge housing opportunities for those not only working in the area, but also those intent on commuting daily elsewhere. Indeed without this kind of suburbia London would not be the city it is today. That all said some of the housing would benefit from a drastic facelift, particularly the grey terraced semis lined along the length of the North Circular.

Leisure opportunities are vast in the area. As mentioned, Wembley Stadium hosts a growing range of international and domestic sporting events, and the nearby Wembley arena is a popular concert venue.

Numerous famous individuals live in or have lived in Brent, comedian Eddie Izzard and screen legend Peter O Toole being good examples.
