Moving to Brentford?

Just outside the London postal district to the West of London, Brentford is best described as a suburban district lying close to where the River Thames and River Brent converge. It’s still technically Greater London (The London Borough of Hounslow to be accurate) however and can be reached by the western outreach of the Piccadilly line, the closest stops probably being Northfields or South Ealing. Over ground trains (South western Trains) can be accessed at Brentford Railway Station itself, where regular services operate to among other places, Waterloo. Road routes and consequently bus services are readily available into London also.

The site which Brentford occupies actually pre- dates Roman occupation of Britain and therefore the founding of London itself, it was an important fording point as its name would now suggest and was also reputed to be a meeting point for pre Roman tribes, given the number and type of artifacts that have been found in the areas in years since.

Brentford high street, not far from the railway station is an old fashioned affair, with a decent selection of fairly staple stores, banks, betting shops and estate agents. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants on the high street, The Island Restaurant and Bar , off the high street and overlooking the Grand Union Canal is highly regarded, as is La Rosetta, an authentic Italian eatery. One of the town’s most popular bars The Waterman’s Arms is near the station and has loads of traditional charm with some unusually Japanese features!

Brentford is home to their own League football team Brentford FC., who are currently in the midst of a proposed new stadium development on Lionel road. Originally scheduled to be complete by 2012, it is now, due to the economy downturn, under some closer scrutiny. There is a leisure centre in the town, run by the Council and a private health club called Top Notch, offering state of the art fitness facilities.

There are several other places of interest in the area. Syon house, built on the old site of Syon Abbey (once the largest abbey church in all of England) is the London residence of the Duke of Northumberland. Boston Manor House, built in 1622 is a fine manor house particularly noted for its ornate plasterwork ceilings. Finally, Gunnersbury Park Museum, the museum for the area has numerous costume exhibits from various eras, as well as a large selection of Roman and Viking weaponry found in the surrounding vicinity. Several modern companies are based in Brentford. Sega the electronics giant, Audi, and Waterstones all consider Brentford an important base, as do Brompton’s, manufacturers of folding bicycles.

Brentford’s most famous inhabitants include J.M.W Turner the landscape painter and John Quincy Adams (America’s 6th president) who lived there for two years
