Moving to Brixton?
South of the River Thames and six miles from Central London. Brixton is actually part of the London Borough of Lambeth and is officially designated as being ‘inner South London’. Its best known neighbouring areas are Clapham, Stockwell and Streatham. It’s easily reached by London Underground services with tube stops at Brixton itself (the Southernmost Terminus on the Victoria Line), Stockwell and Clapham. Over ground train services can be caught at Brixton railway station with regular services between London Victoria and Kent. By road Brixton is highly accessible too, sitting close to the A23 London to Brighton road among others, and it is also the meeting point for numerous London bus routes. To complete its accessibility, Transport for London has proposed a tram link to Camden via Central London.
The opening of the Vauxhall Bridge in 1816 signalled the start of Brixton’s development as a prominent London suburb. Between 1860 and 1890 it was a genuinely middle-class suburb benefitting from easy access into Central London. In fact in 1880, Brixton’s own so called Electric Avenue became the first street in the area to be entirely lit by electricity. The building of large and expensive homes followed. These were converted into apartments at the turn of the century however with the study influx of the working classes into the area. This all meant that by 1920 Brixton was considered the shopping centre of South London with a market, a cinema, bars and a theatre. Things were to change when Brixton was bombed in World War Two, leading to slum clearances and the onset of mass council-estate construction, accompanied by the mass influx of immigrants in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Brixton’s history since has been impacted by a degree of crime motivated unrest, the worst of it in the tense early 1980’s.
Nowadays Brixton is experiencing something of a re- birth, based partly around its status as a centre for culture and the performing arts. The main venues are The Brixton Academy and The Fridge but there are a host of smaller locations, hosting a wide range of attractions. For more active people, Brixton is home to a large, custom-built skate park at Stockwell. Shopping in Brixton is centred largely on Brixton market, open daily and selling a vast range of Afro-Caribbean foods and products as well as appealing to many other ethnicities. Additionally there are covered shopping arcades at Reliance Arcade and Market row, completing a comprehensive and somewhat unique shopping experience. Restaurants in Brixton are readily available and one could eat food from almost anywhere in the world. Asmara on Cold Harbour lane specialises in East African specialities, whereas Franco Mana is a cool pizza restaurant situated in the heart of Brixton market itself.
Brixton has been prominent in song over the years, The Clash’s ‘Guns of Brixton’ in 1979 being a commentary on gun crime and law enforcement. Whereas Eddie Grant’s 1982 hit talked of ‘Electric Avenue’. The area was also thought to be the home of Sir Walter Raleigh (who received a visit there from Queen Elizabeth 1) and some of the Sherlock Homes stories were thought to be based around Brixton. Finally, two of Brixton’s best known products are singer David Bowie and celebrity wife Sharon Osborne.
