Moving to Camden Town?

Camden Town, normally shortened to just Camden is an inner-city district located in North London and is part of the London Borough of the same name. It is easily accessed by bus from Central London and by London Underground at Camden Town station itself( renovation plans have been proposed many times to handle weekend visitor volumes) and Mornington Crescent station( at opposite ends of Camden High Street) and both on the Northern Line.

Camden’s visual appearance is characterised by the canal that flows through it. The Regent’s Canal flow s through the North part of the area on its journey to the Limehouse basin, from its junction with the Grand Union Canal in the North West near Paddington. Canal boat trips are common in the area and in fact many of the hand-rails still show rope marks from when horses were used to move freight along the canal length.

The other side to Camden is its historically relaxed attitude and a historical association with popular culture, with many punk and Goth sub cultures originating here. Also part of that culture is Camden’s markets, along the parts of the high street and around Camden Lock, beside the canal. These markets are a major tourist attraction, particularly at weekends; with everything from collectables, books, music and antiques. The shops along Camden High Street, while mixed with recognisable High Street names, are popular with those on the look-out for alternative clothing. Restaurants and bars are readily available throughout the whole area, mainly on the High Street and its side roads. The Camden Brasserie on Jamestown road has been serving satisfied local and celebrity customers for a quarter of a century and to this day is still family-run. A little less formal but no less impressive is Hache, a gourmet burger restaurant on Inverness Street, off the High Street. It’s cool and much talked about, so definitely a worthy stop off while searching the nearby markets. If it’s a pub you seek, try the ‘World’s End’ near the railway station.

Camden is also well served by popular entertainment venues, the best known probably the Roundhouse Theatre, first built in 1847, and developed in 2006 into a theatre and music venue. There are others too, Koko’s near Mornington Crescent Tube station and The Electric Ballroom.

Of interest nearby is London Zoo, the world’s oldest scientific zoo, situated at the Northern edge of Regent’s Park. It’s currently undergoing a major renovation, the aim being to improve both the visitor experience and the animal’s living environment. It’s a great day out for both adults and children.

Camden has a history steeped in film and music and famous people from Camden include Charles Dickens and George Bernard Shaw. More recently, wayward pop stars Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty are often seen in the area.
