Moving to Chelsea?
Really an area within the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Chelsea is an
opulent district in the West of London. Located just to the west of the City of
Westminster, the heart of modern London, the area is bounded in the South by
the river Thames, where its frontage runs from Chelsea Bridge along what’s
known as Chelsea Embankment. In the north it bleeds into the chic neighbourhoods
of Knightsbridge and South Kensington (where these meet is an area of huge
international property interest). Easily accessible via London underground,
there are stations at Sloane Square, South Kensington and Earls Court (an
actual Chelsea underground station has been proposed) as well as having ample
bus services; Chelsea is no more than a ten minute journey from Oxford street.
Chelsea, the word meaning literally ‘landing-place for chalk or limestone’,
from Anglo Saxon, actually pre dates the Domesday book. By the mid 17th
century it had become a district popular with the wealthy and at that time was
still rural, serving London to the East as a market garden. Its modern
reputation, as an area of influence and artistic creativity evolved during the
19th century where it was patronised by a large colony of artists. Not much
changed thereafter and its main road artery the Kings Road became synonymous
with the ‘Swinging Sixties’ movement and all that came with that. After that
for a while, youth culture decamped for other in- vogue locales such as Camden
and Notting Hill, but recently it’s undergoing another resurgence not harmed
by its endorsement by Princes William and Harry and co.
As you’d expect shopping is excellent. The Kings Road has a great range of
both smaller boutiques and an increasing proliferation of more recognised high
street names. In any case if you can’t find it here, Knightsbridge is close at
hand with Harrods as its centrepiece. Also as you’d expect, the choice of
eating and drinking is endless, but worthy of mention is Cheyne Walk Brasserie,
with superbly prepared grills taking centre- stage. Dan’s on Sydney Street
brings a more relaxed village feel, relying heavily on seasonal vegetables,
their bright conservatory successfully extending summer into autumn.
One of the area’s best known events is the annual Chelsea Flower Show,
held each year for five days in May, organised by the Royal Horticultural
Society. Apart from being one of the world’s gardening events, it is also the
beginning of London’s summer social season, attracting around 150,000 visitors
each year. Definitely worth a visit, but tickets must be purchased in
advance.
As you’d guess everyone who’s everyone has lived in Chelsea at some point,
but good examples are novelist Mark Twain, singer and campaigner Bob Geldof
and popular actor Hugh Grant
Historical Place of Interest: Oscar Wilde’s house on Tite Street.
