Moving to Clerkenwell?

Once being referred to as ‘Little Italy’, due to the large numbers of Italian residents in the 19th Century, Clerkenwell is an area of Central London located within the London Borough of Islington. Accessible due to being surrounded by London Underground stops at Angel, King’s Cross, Barbican and Chancery lane. Tube services and over ground services are also available at nearby Farringdon. Bus routes are readily available into Central London which is really no more than a mile to the South.

Since early days, Clerkenwell has always been a rather fashionable residential area, in fact it was viewed as something as a luxury retreat for Londoners keen to sample its spas, theatres and teahouses. This however was all before it became the built-up area we recognise it as today.

The onset of this change was brought about largely by the Industrial Revolution where industries like brewing, printing and also watch and clock manufacture found their home in this area. Although in steady decline this continued until World War Two when Clerkenwell, much like most similar sites, underwent industrial decline on a large scale. Housing estates sprang up and largely have remained until the neighbourhood underwent something of a rebirth in the 1990’s. Now Clerkenwell is popular with loft-dwelling city professionals with bars and restaurants appearing to cater for this kind of more gentrified lifestyle.

Consequently, some of London’s finest eateries can be found here, St John, near Smithfield is a traditionally British affair specialising in the highest quality meat cuts. It has won numerous prestigious awards including Best Overall London Restaurant in 2001. Also worth a look is Moro, a Spanish/ Moroccan restaurant with a great reputation, near Exmouth Market. Its Moorish angle is a winner as are its tapas.

Shopping as such would not be Clerkenwell’s unique selling point however London’s best shopping is so close at hand, it’s no great imposition to have to travel a little distance to find it.

For relative peace and quiet, Clerkenwell Green, one of London’s best preserved village centres in central London is worth a look. The name though is something of a misnomer as there has been no actual grass here for some 300 years! St James church lies at the heart of it alongside an imposing court house, as well as some bars and restaurants.

Famous people associated with this smart neighbourhood include Vladimir Lenin, who spent some time here, Oliver Cromwell and novelist Daniel Defoe, author of ‘Robinson Crusoe’
