Lying around nine miles South of Central London, Croydon is a large town and
commercial centre within the London Borough of the same name. Its location is
importantly placed on what is considered the main transport corridor between
London and the South coast, and according to the London Plan, is one of the
most important Metropolitan centres. While not yet connected to London
Underground services (they will for the Olympics in 2012) Norwood Junction
and West Croydon carry over ground services into central London. In addition
a proposed extension to the East London line to West Croydon is now under
construction, north of the River Thames. East Croydon station, one of the
busiest in Croydon and one of London’s most important carries trains to
London and the South. By road the old Brighton road used to pass directly
through the town, now the A23 bypasses the town altogether. An important
logistical location then, consequently it has infra structure to match those

There is evidence of Roman Settlement in the area dating back to the 5th
and 6th century and Christian leaders weren’t apparent here until the 10th
century. A charter was attained in 1276 for there to be a weekly market and
this probably marks the birth of Croydon as not only one of the most important
market towns on North East Surrey, but also as an urban centre.
As Croydon grew it became increasingly known as a pleasant, leafy suburb;
popular with our Victorian predecessors. By the 1950’s Croydon was becoming
congested, resulting in a government act approving new offices, road
infrastructure etc, designed to ease the pressure
Modern Croydon is an important shopping centre particularly with the
addition in 1970 of the three-storey Whitgift shopping centre offering a large

1980’s brought more changes designed to make Croydon a more user-friendly

officially a ‘city’.

performing arts and technology, responsible for producing stars like Amy
Winehouse and Katy Melua. Traditional sources of education are also readily
available locally in the form of primary, secondary and further education.
