Moving to Dagenham?

Situated nine or so miles east of London, Dagenham is a suburban town forming part of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. It is very close to the main A13 route into Central London, which also links to the M25 and A406 North Circular road. Dagenham is serviced by over ground C2C Services into London Fenchurch St and London Underground trains (District Line) at Dagenham East, Dagenham Heathway and Becontree. Dagenham Heathway also services regular bus routes in and out of central London.

The town we now know as Dagenham was almost certainly just a small farmstead dating back to 687 AD as mentioned in a charter at Barking Abbey. Much later it became a municipal borough in 1938 before arriving in its modern title as part of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham in 1965.

In recent years Dagenham’s raison d-etre has been firmly rooted in the automobile industry, that becoming the case when Ford relocated their plant from Manchester in 1931. This involved the development of a vast 500 acre riverside site incorporating blast furnaces and its own power station. Full production continued, providing employment for the local area until in 2002, when, due to over-supply in Europe, operations were scaled down significantly. Nearby Dagenham dock, once a very important coaling port itself occupies a large site adjacent to the river Thames, and here, as part of the Thames Gateway redevelopment zone, there are plans for huge amounts of new housing schemes. This could increase the local population by tens of thousands according to current estimates.

For eating and shopping you’d be best advised to travel, Dagenham itself offers little other than small shops and takeaways, so a trip in either direction along the A13 is the answer. Go East to Lakeside shopping centre and you’ll find one of the largest malls in the country, along with a cinema and the Boardwalk development of restaurants (Wagamamas and Los Iguanas being particularly popular). Alternatively head west to London and everything is at your disposal.

Back in town, Dagenham itself has a notable football pedigree in the form of Dagenham and Redbridge FC, campaigning currently in football league two. They have embarked on some giant-killing excursions over the years but always come up short.

Dagenham has also had its share of noteworthy inhabitants including Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey, England Football manager Sir Alf Ramsey and singer Sandy Shaw.
