Moving to Docklands?
The term Dockland actually refers to a large area in the East of London,
comprising fragments of several boroughs such as Southwark, Greenwich, Newham
and Tower Hamlets. The term Docklands was first used in a government report
in 1971, discussing development plans for the Port Of London docks (although
the modern Docklands area does not comprise all of the former port). Access to
Docklands has improved markedly, mainly to keep up with the rapid commercial
and residential expansion which has taken place. The Limehouse link tunnel
was built to connect the Highway with the A13, despite rumours that it was
one of the most expensive stretches of road ever constructed.
There is a Jubilee line connection at Isle of Dogs and the DLR has stops
at Canary Wharf, Beckton and London City Airport (with several others in
between) Several transport enhancements to the area, too numerous to list are
being discussed to further improve getting around the Docklands area.
The clearest symbol of the scale and ambition of Docklands revival was
without doubt the Canary Wharf project, combining Britain’s tallest building
with a completely new financial district to rival the City of London. The
development was far from trouble free though, the 1990’s property slump hit
at just the wrong time, leaving developers with property they couldn’t
sell.
The grand plan and vision was realised though as now the area is a
vibrant, cosmopolitan environment combining retail facilities, restaurants
and bars all within easy reach of the commercial centre with commanding views
across the Thames. Several large banks have a presence here along with numerous
other companies operating in associated sectors.
It should come as no surprise then that Canary Wharf has its share of nice
places to meet, eat and drink, many of them with great views from outside
terraces, ideal for summer evenings. The Gaucho Grill near the river at
Canary Wharf is an Argentinean steak restaurant of high repute whereas The
Gun at Cold Harbour on the Isle of Dogs is a fine British style place with a
nice veranda overlooking the river.
The development of Docklands has had a very positive effect on areas
on areas on its fringes such as Deptford and Greenwich which are undergoing
large scale renovation, mainly because improved transport links have made
them increasingly attractive to commuters.
The Docklands despite being relatively new has its place in culture,
Charles Dickens referring to the area in several of his novels( Great
Expectations being the most celebrated) and the recent film ’28 Days Later’
depicted a post super virus Britain, where Docklands was the army control
centre.
Also within reach of Docklands is the 02 arena, located on the Greenwich
peninsula (served by the Jubilee line). It’s a vast indoor restaurant,
occasional exhibition and major concert venue, so converted after the
Millennium Celebrations where it was a major national exhibition area.
Historical Place of Interest: Museum of the Docklands, Isle of Dogs.
