Moving to Ealing?

Sometimes referred to as ‘The Queen ‘of the Suburbs, Ealing is an urban development located 12 miles west of Central London, within the London Borough of the same name. It is considered one of the major metropolitan centres by the London Plan, a planning document for the London area, finalised in 2004 with several amendments since. Ealing Broadway is the main rail link, servicing both over ground services and London Underground trains (District and Central lines). There are also stops at West Ealing and Ealing common. Its location is excellent for road services too, being within close proximity of Heathrow Airport the M4, M1 and M25 as well as many smaller link roads and consequently there are numerous bus services.

Early evidence would suggest that parts of the Ealing have been occupied for as long as 7000 years, dating back to the Iron Age. According to the first available census in 1559 there were at that time a total of 85 household inhabitants of Ealing village. During the 19th century however Londoners sought the relative peace of Ealing as a relaxing retreat from the bustle of London, additionally it was on the route of the old Oxford road, an important good artery in and out of London. As London steadily grew, the Ealing area became increasingly used for market gardening, and as result, villages grew and merged into larger pockets of population, soon rendering Ealing a genuine suburb of London. This was made even more important when the Great Western Railway was built, part of it passing through Ealing. During the next thirty or so years, scores of houses, mostly semi-detached were built to cater for the increasingly affluent middle-classes , all looking for more space than was now available in London.

Modern Ealing then is a hiving suburban town, with a large eighty store shopping centre at Ealing Broadway, open seven days a week and providing high street brands and cafes and eateries. Ealing also has a sprinkling of smaller, independent shops for those in search of something a little more unique. A good place to start when eating-out in the neighbourhood would be Charlotte’s Place on St Matthews Road. It’s an independently owned restaurant with an al fresco twist, weather permitting of course. Greek food lovers will enjoy the popular Retsina and Mousaka on the Uxbridge road, offering all the atmosphere of Greek hospitality with excellent food too.

Ealing is also famed for its film studios, which are renowned for the Ealing Comedies and for being the oldest in the world, were taken over by the BBC in 1955. Consequently Ealing studios have been influential in productions such as Doctor Who and Monty Python.

Famous people to call Ealing home are Fred Perry the tennis player and Julian Clary the comedian.
