Strictly speaking the northernmost borough of London, the London borough of Enfield (formed in 1965) is home to the town of Enfield itself and is technically ‘outer London’. It is approximately 15 miles North of central London so for transport purposes it is served by the Piccadilly Line of London Underground services, with stations at; Arnos Grove, Southgate and Cockfosters, where the line terminates. Suburban national rail services (including those to East Anglia) operate readily throughout the area as well as many London bus routes. By the road Enfield is easily accessed via the A406 North Circular M25 and the A10.

Enfield started life as a small market town on the edge of forests, in those times a full day of travel North from London. Now though it’s a residential suburb with superb links to the central London. Road services have always been there though, certainly back to Roman times when Enfield was attached to London by Ermine Street, the great Roman road which stretched all the way North to York, an amazing feat of engineering. As well as being a notable market town, historically Enfield’s name has been closely linked with the manufacture of armaments (The Lee Enfield being a well known, standard issue for the British Army)

Modern Enfield received a major boost in 2007, undergoing large scale renovation. This redevelopment retained the Palace Gardens shopping centre and an extension was added with additional car-parking. Also, work began in 1999 on Edmonton Green, an area in the east of the Borough, including shopping, municipal housing and leisure facilities. This work is still ongoing. Many other facilities are gathered around the main A10 road including retail parks and a Cineworld cinema complex. The western part of the Borough however is predominantly residential, with small local shopping complexes sprinkled throughout (Southgate and Cockfosters for example)

As you’d expect there is no shortage of eating–out in the area, a good option appears to be Chiquito, a fun and lively Mexican on the Great Cambridge road. For Italian fans Nelitos on Windmill Hill has an excellent reputation for that kind of thing. In terms of other facilities, the borough is well served with schools and further education (the University of Middlesex has two campus’s there) as well as two major National Health hospitals at Chase Farm and North Middlesex.

Recreationally, Enfield is home to Enfield Town FC play lower league football at Southbury road, but hope to move to a brand new site in 2010. Cricket and rugby is also played locally as well as swimming and Basketball.

Modern Enfield is a stronghold of youth activity and has produced singing starlet Adele, as well as famous prime- minister Benjamin Disraeli.
