Moving to Fulham?
Situated around 3 miles West of Central London, Fulham is a neighbourhood in
South-West London and part of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.
Closely bordered by Putney and Chelsea, it was formerly a metropolitan Borough
in its own right. Accessible readily by London Bus services it also sits on the
Wimbledon branch of the London Underground District line, the main stations
being Fulham Broadway, Parsons Green and Putney Bridge
Located on a loop in the River Thames across from Barns and Putney, Fulham’s
name referred to a place of ‘ fowl’ or one of ‘mud’, probably much to do with
the fact that the River regularly flooded in this part of its course through
South West London. Danish invaders in the 9th Century were said to have
wintered at Fulham and Hammersmith and there is evidence of a church’s
presence in the area sometime in the 12th Century. In later years Fulham was
synonymous with debauchery, gaining an image not unlike the Las Vegas of
London, due to the prevalence of vices like gambling and prostitution. Its
reputation as a fairly working class neighbourhood remained largely into the
20th Century, thereafter it was extensively renovated post World War 2 and
again during the 1980’s. That has all changed now however, indeed Fulham is
considered one of the most exclusive areas in which to own property, with
prices hugely in excess of the average.
The focal point of the area is the Fulham Broadway shopping centre,
conveniently near the underground station. Modern and open 7 days a week it is
a comprehensive and modern facility, offering everything in the way of shopping
and restaurants, not to mention additional features such as a large cinema
complex and gym facilities. It’s one of the best in the area and totally in
keeping with the neighbourhood’s high class image. As far as restaurants and
bars are concerned Fulham has extremely rich pickings and some are truly
excellent value. Joe’s Brasserie on Wandsworth Bridge is a popular hang-out,
with a spacious interior and large and modern dishes. No less impressive is the
chic Mao Tai, on the New Kings road which combines stylish cooking with a broad
Asian remit. Very pleasant indeed! For a drink try the Eight Bells in Fulham
High Street or even better The White Horse in nearby Parsons Green,
affectionately nicknamed ‘TheSloaney Poney’, due to it’s often ‘Sloane Ranger’
clientele.
As well as having a wealth of pubs and restaurants, there is actually a fair
bit of open space around, Fulham being home to several pleasant parks;
Hurlingham Park and Fulham Palace Gardens being a couple of the better examples.
Operating at ‘parks; of a different kind, both Fulham FC and Chelsea FC are
found in the area and play in the Barclays Premiership, the nation’s top
flight. The famous Hurlingham sports club, with a waiting list thought to
stretch to fifteen years is also located nearby.
Famous Fulham residents include former James Bond Roger Moore and
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, as well as Chef Antonio Carlucio.
