Moving to Greenwich?

Greenwich is an area on the South Bank of the River Thames, within the London Borough of the same name. It consists of an older small town centre and an area along the South Bank of the River Thames. It is roughly 3 miles from Central London. Adequately serviced by London Underground services at North Greenwich (beside the 02 arena and two miles from Greenwich town centre). There are also DLR stops at Greenwich and Deptford. Over- ground trains run regularly from Greenwich station into Central London (Charing Cross and Cannon Street) By road, the easiest route to Central London is probably via the Blackwall Tunnel. Interestingly also, various river boat crossings are available, the best known being the Thames Clipper which takes commuters all the way to Embankment north of the River.

Dating back to Bronze age times and sited on the Roman road (Watling Street) to Dover it is best known in recent years for its Maritime connections and for lending its name to meridian or Greenwich Mean time, the town itself was a Royal Palace dating back to the 15th Century and was the birthplace of many members of the House of Tudor, including Henry VIII. In the 17th century, the town then became increasingly popular with the wealthy and as a result some very large houses were built. The town centre nowadays is characterised by Georgian and Victorian architecture, spreading to the West of Greenwich Park and the Royal Naval College. Shopping in this area is excellent and mostly centred around Greenwich market, a covered shopping area selling all manner of goods particularly arts and antiques. It trades five days a week and is also home to many cafes, bars and restaurants. One of the best restaurants around is The Ivy at Rivington on Greenwich High Street, associated with the famous theatre land haunt of the same name. It specialises in traditional, back to basics British cooking, prepared to a very high standard. Another well regarded venue is Elements on Greenwich High road, consisting of an international menu in vibrant and chic surroundings, Also close to Greenwich town is the Greenwich peninsula, a large chunk of land and the site of the Greenwich Millennium Village, the 02 arena and a large Odeon cinema complex.

In 1997 Maritime Greenwich was added to a list of World Heritage sites, both in recognition of the old town centre (and Sir Christopher Wren’s domed masterpiece The Royal Naval College) and also for the riverfront sites of interest, primarily the remains of the famous Cutty Sark on the Thames.

There are many notable residents associated with Greenwich, notably King Henry VIII and poet Cecil Day-Lewis. More recently singer Jools Holland and journalist Andrew Gilligan gave called Greenwich home.
