Moving to Hackney?
Located around three miles from Central London to the North East, the name
applies to the London Borough of Hackney, formed from the metropolitan boroughs
of Hackney, Shoreditch and Stoke Newington in 1965. Currently, Hackney is
poorly served by London Underground services with only one station, Manor
House, located within the Borough. There are however plans to extend the East
London Line through the borough, running trains to South London which, given
the demands likely to be placed on the area before and during the Olympics in
2012, is absolutely necessary. The North London line (an over-ground service)
travels East to West through the Borough, with a stop at Hackney Central, the
historical and administrative heart of the area.
Individual parts of the Borough of rich history, given that the Roman road
Ermine Street forms its Western edge. In the East the Borough is defined by the
River Lee which itself was an important boundary between pre-Roman tribes. In
Tudor times much of Hackney was seized and the region became a retreat for
nobility, so much so that village of Hackney flourished in the Tudor to
Georgian period as a place of rural civility, only brought to an end by the
construction of the railway in around 1850. Industrialisation, post-war
development and some immigration added to Hackney’s cosmopolitan image and
there is extensive renovation underway of the Boroughs large stock of Georgian
and Victorian terraces. Additionally, modern apartment developments and
warehouse conversions are providing accommodation for the areas ever growing
population.
The heart of Hackney Central is Mare Street which slices through the middle
of the area and is dominated on one side by popular cultural venue the Hackney
Empire. This neighbourhood is also home to the town hall and the Technology
and Learning centre, completed in 2002. Church Street is the areas vibrant
shopping core and there is a large Tesco supermarket in nearby Morning lane.
In fact this large shop chain was founded here originating from a market stall
in 1919. There is a planning application relevant to the current site which
would see a new a new multi-storey shopping centre and parking built, the aim
being completion in 2001.
Eating in Hackney is truly a multi-cultural experience and as a result there
is huge diversity. Those in search of fabulous East-African dishes should try
Exceline on Mare Street; it’s very authentic and popular in the area. Another
place worth trying is LMNT on nearby Queensbridge Road; it’s a gastro
experience of a high standard and always receives praise.
The key to Hackney’s development however would appear to be the site of the
2012 Olympic games at nearby Hackney marshes. The impact of such an event on a
city like London as a whole just can’t be quantified, but for a Borough like
Hackney, the benefits are huge. The infrastructure of the area will be
modernised greatly to cope with the influx of visitors and all that will
surely improve this at times maligned part of London. Additionally, the
spin-offs commercially from such a high profile staging will also be
invaluable.
Famous people associated with Hackney include the late singer Marc Bolan
of T Rex and novelist Edgar Allen Poe.
