Moving to Hammersmith?

Hammersmith is an urban centre in the West of London forming part of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Its location is around 4 miles from Central London and occupies part of the North bank of the River Thames. Its status as a major London transport hub means that it is very well accessed by London underground services at Hammersmith Broadway and Ravenscourt Park. These two give access to three London Underground lines (Hammersmith & City, District and Piccadilly). The area is located on the A4 trunk road, a major artery connecting London with the West via the M4 motorway and Heathrow Airport. As a result London Buses are plentiful along this important thoroughfare.

There is evidence of settlement in this part of London dating back as far as Saxon and Roman times, however it was not until the development of the railway in the middle of the 19th Century that this area took on the key role it has today. Population exploded during that period in line with a fair amount of industrialisation (Osram made lamps in their factor nearby), but this has given way to a more a more commercial and service orientated focus of late.

The focal point of the area is Hammersmith Broadway and the main street connected to it, King Street. As well as being the areas main shopping district (Hammersmith Road and Shepherds Bush road are others) it also contains a theatre (the Lyric Theatre) and cinema as well as pubs and restaurants in plentiful supply (Tosa is a very popular Japanese restaurant with locals) The commercial centre of the district is mainly on Hammersmith road where the Ark, an office complex housing the headquarters of several companies traverses the road.

In addition to the busier areas, the pedestrianised riverside area of Hammersmith is quieter and home to boat clubs, a park and some nice pubs. The best example is the Dove, reputed to be the oldest surviving pub of its kind in London and the smallest bar in the world. The author Ernest Hemingway was said to often frequent it along with fellow literary great Graham Greene (though not together) Also in this area are Riverside Studios, consisting of a cinema and performing space as well as a popular cafe and bar. It was formerly part of BBC studios and used for many popular productions. From a cultural perspective Hammersmith is also home to the Apollo (formerly the Odeon) a busy concert venue as well as the Hammersmith Palais nightclub, sadly now disused and set for demolition.

Notable Hammersmith residents include Lily Allen singing starlet and Alan Rickman, popular British actor.

Historical Place of Interest: The Dove pub, with the smallest bar in the world!
