Moving to Hampton?
Hampton is best described as an area of suburbia, centred on an old village on the North Bank
of the River Thames. Officially within the London Borough of Kingston upon Thames, the only one
to straddle the River. The village itself, around 12 miles from Central London has a population
of around 18,000 and is serviced by Hampton Railway station, offering regular services on
Southwestern Trains into London Waterloo. By road it is located close to the M25 and also the
M3 motorway which heads south to Portsmouth. The M4 heading west is not far away nor is
Heathrow Airport for more adventurous travel. There is also a ferry facility running from
Hampton to Moulsey Hurst south of the river, the summer months seeing more regular
crossings.
The village of Hampton dates back to Anglo-Saxon times with its name broadly meaning a
farmstead within a bend or loop of a river. However when one thinks of Hampton, one generally
associates it with Hampton Palace Court and its annual flower show. It is a magnificent
building dating back to the 14th Century and is one of only two surviving palaces belonging to
King Henry VIII( St James’s Palace is the other) Open to the public, it is one of London’s
great tourist attraction and a major drawing card for the area as a whole having seen an
estimated 55 million visitors over the years.
Hampton Village and nearby Hampton Hill a 19th century off shoot of the village itself,
have limited but adequate shopping facilities. The High Street of Hampton Hill has a wide
variety of shops and cafes and pubs as well as a 75 year old bakery. Much of 19th century
Hampton Hill remains in place and really only the Northern end has seen significant
development over recent years. However, the best shopping facilities in the area are located
fairly close-by in Kingston upon Thames, a bigger town with high street stores and
supermarkets etc.
There is some good eating available in Hampton and its nearby neighbour however, The Hampton
Hill Charcoal Grill on The Parade being a good starting point. Le Petit Nantais in nearby
Hampton Court is a delightful French restaurant offering authentic and very affordable cuisine.
No excuse for not finding something to suit your taste there are many other options around.
Hampton has a place in modern culture too and in fact in tow of Charles Dickens best known
novels Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby both had references to Hampton Village. Also Hampton
was mentioned in H G Well’s novel ‘War of The Worlds’
Famous people from Hampton are few but one notable exception is Queen guitarist Brian May.
