Moving to Haringey?
Located 5 or so miles from Central London and within the London Borough of
the same name, Haringey is really a residential area of North London close to
Crouch End. Serviced by London Underground services at Manor House Station on
the Piccadilly line as well as Turnpike Lane Station, both of which are
located within the Borough, it is relatively well connected. Haringey also
has an East Coast main line station in addition to another stop which supports
trains to Barking and Gospel Oak at Haringey Green Lines Station. London Bus
services are also relatively frequent in the Borough.
It could be said that transport and communications in general have gone a
long way to shaping Haringey as we currently know it. In Roman times a
roadway North was established and this has remained in more modern terms
as an important route of communication. Also the arrival of The Great
Northern Railway in the mid 19th Century served to create a boundary within
the Borough at that time. As a result a large number of Victorian houses were
built in the area, many of which have now undergone renovation and conversion
to accommodate the town’s expanding multicultural population.
From the 1750’s until the middle of the 2oth Century, Haringey was a place
where Londoners came to relax at venues such as the Haringey Arena and stadium
which were both very popular leisure destinations of their day. Sadly though,
the need for retail space spelled the end for both in recent years.
The central focus of Haringey today is the main thoroughfare called
Green Lanes with the aforementioned station at one end. It has a distinctly
cosmopolitan feel and is home to many shops cafes and restaurants along its
route. There is also a more modern shopping centre, the Arena, home to among
others Sainsbury’s, Homebase and a drive-thru McDonalds (one of the first in
the UK) Some of the shops on Green Lanes have a much longer history such as
Disney’s furniture store, a presence here since 1913. Eating and drinking in
Haringey is excellent and again fairly diverse, try Penang Satay house near
Turnpike Lane, it comes highly recommended, also the Salisbury pub on Green
Lanes is grade 2 listed and appears in the 1980 movie The Long Good Friday as
well as a more recent Charlie Chaplin biopic.
Haringey borough is fortunate enough to have sixty three major schools
serving the local community as well as a fair amount of sporting interest
(Tottenham Hotspur are within the Borough) as is the Alexandra Palace sporting
and leisure venue located near Wood Green and Muswell Hill. This gives a
good indication of the scale of the Borough itself and shows that there is a
lot more to offer apart from just the town of Haringey.
Famous people from the Haringey area include Barbara Windsor and American
X-Files actress Gillian Anderson who lived in Crouch End for a period.
