Moving to Harrow?
Situated around 12 miles from the Centre of London, Harrow is a metropolitan area of great
importance and is part of the London Borough of the same name. Formerly a municipal borough in
Middlesex prior to receiving its inclusion into Greater London in 1965, it is well connected with
Central London both on London Underground Services (several stations including Harrow on the Hill
and North Harrow among others) and over ground lines at Harrow and Wealdstone and Northolt Park
stations. The town of Central Harrow, which is the focus of the Borough generally, is also
located very close to several main road links such as the M25, M4 and the M1. Just to complete
its accessibility, Harrow is also a major bus route hub and has many services running regularly
into Central London.
The earliest recorded use of the word Harrow dates back to the 14th century and it was thought
to broadly mean ‘temple’. The temple as such was most likely situated on Harrow hill, where a
church now sits. (St Mary’s). The presence of Harrow School, one of the most prestigious schools
in the UK on the hill has preserved the areas reputation as leafy if rather pricey suburbia. The
surrounding area however has become surrounded by semi-detached houses and conversions very much
in keeping with much of London’s North West. Wealdstone and South Harrow particularly has been
the subject of quite a lot of regeneration and as a result, a lot of new accommodation has
appeared in recent years. The northern part of the Borough around Stanmore and Northwood is
particularly affluent, not to mention appealing due to its proximity to London (20 minutes by
train). As a result a large proportion of the Edwardian stock of housing here has been updated
to cater for the increasing numbers of families and single people who now view Harrow as an
attractive proposition.
Shopping in the main town of Harrow is fairly diverse actually with a good blend of standard
high street stores such as T K Maxx and Debenhams along with some smaller more individual
boutiques. Harrow central has two large shopping malls where the chain stores are located, a
pedestrianised shopping street and a large Warner Cinema centre. Harrow on The Hill nearby
however is where the more unique options are best sought out; in fact high street stores are
actively discouraged here. There are a few nice pubs and restaurants however as well as a couple
of trendier arty businesses.
Eating out in Harrow is in general fairly rewarding, largely due to the vast range of options
available. On the Station Road between Harrow and Wealdstone try Sakonis, a tremendous Indian.
Also close by is The Golden Palace Restaurant, rated one of the best Chinese eateries in London
The list of famous people from Harrow is very lengthy but some notable ones are comedy actor
Ronnie Barker, astronomer Patrick Moore and popular singer James Blunt who attended Harrow
School.
