Moving to Highgate?
Split between no fewer than three London Boroughs (Haringey, Camden and Islington) Highgate is
really just a village in North East London, tucked away at the North Eastern corner of Hampstead
Heath. Originally part of the municipal Borough of Hornsey, it has an extremely exclusive
reputation and the residents are keen that it remains that way! To get there is reasonably easy
too as there are two stations, Highgate itself and Archway, both on the Northern Line (High Barnet
branch) of London Underground. London bus routes service the area and the old A1 road is
reasonably close at hand, offering access to central London, around 3 miles south.
Traditionally Highgate was the Bishop of London’s hunting estate, which led to the creation of
numerous country pubs along the route. It is particularly noteworthy for its Cemetery, Highgate
School (vitally important to the village and dating back to 1565) and the proliferation of rather
grand houses, many of them Georgian in style and of course era. The area was synonymous with
Highwayman Dick Turpin who was said to operate nearby and Highgate Hill, the street linking
nearby Archway to Highgate village is the site of Europe’s first cable car, dating back to the
19th Century. A village of history, tradition and great charm.
The main shopping focus of this quaint part of London is the traditional High Street, offering
a lovely mix of shops, cosy restaurants and coffee houses. There are very few recognised High
Street names here (Tesco is here however) and you can’t help thinking that this is largely by
design, and entirely in keeping with the image of affluent civility. It shouldn’t be an issue
however as Highgate’s accessible location means that the range of Central London is really not
much of a journey. To eat in Highgate is something of a treat too, try the Village Bistro on the
High Street if you don’t walk past it (it’s very small and easily overlooked), where you’ll be
treated well and served excellent fare. Another ‘must’ is The Bull Pub and Restaurant located
on North Hill in Highgate village. It is basically a gastro-pub, leaning much more on the food
side of things but is very popular with both locals and visitors alike.
Famous people connected with Highgate are numerous and varied, especially given that many
passed through Highgate School. It is a large independent school with a prep and pre-prep
school included, and it also took the decision to become fully co-educational in 2003. It’s
the site of the oldest freemason lodge in the world ( Cholmeley) and is also the original burial
place of famous poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge who came to live in the village, until his remains
were moved and re-buried at nearby St Michael’s Church. Peter Sellers, celebrated actor of Pink
Panther fame also lived in Highgate, and went to school in nearby Hornsey Lane as did violinist
Yehudi Menuhin and singer Sting who actually bought Menuhin’s house.
