Moving to Holorn?

Holborn is best described as an area of Central London synonymous with the route of the City’s east –West running street of the same name. Nearby neighbourhoods include Bloomsbury and Clerkenwell to the East and also Soho and Covent Garden. Access is easy via London Underground with stops at Holborn itself on Kingsway and also Chancery Lane, Covent Garden and St Pauls. Being right in the City, bus routes are plentiful so getting there is not an issue.

First mentioned during the time of King Edgar in 959 Holborn, derived from the word ‘ hollow’ thought to refer to the River Fleet which ran through a steep valley to the East. Holborn Bar and old tollgate on Holborn hill marked the boundary of the City from around 1220.Holborn then became an important location of London’s publishing industry in the 17th Century and some remnants of it still remain in Fleet Street. Much later the Metropolitan Borough of Holborn was formed in 1899 later to be absorbed into the London Borough of Camden in 1965. The modern era has seen Holborn( particularly High Holborn) become a location connected with entertainment venues and even as far back as 1860 there were 22 bars or taverns functioning. Also close-by was the Holborn Empire, the scene of the first ever feature film in 1914, a popular venue until 1960 when it was demolished mainly due to bomb damage sustained some twenty or so years earlier. Holborn has always had a connection with the legal profession too through history and two legal Inns are within the district at Gray’s Inn and Lincoln’s Inn. This century also has seen extensive development of Holborn as a commercial centre with extensive introduction of new hotels and office buildings. It’s location at the junction of the Central and Piccadilly lines therefore make this part of the City an important and consequently busy link with London’s West End.

Most of the shopping in Holborn is located on the main thoroughfares of Kingsway, High Holborn and Grays Inn Road. While perfectly adequate it would be by no means the best of what Central London has to offer, so a short underground trip to Covent Garden or the traditional retail areas around Oxford Street would be advisable.

Bars and restaurants in Holborn are however plentiful and you’ll definitely find something to suit all tastes. AKA situated near the British Museum on West Central Street is rather cool and serves good food in an airy split-level environment. More traditional but no less inviting is Hodgsons on Chancery Lane, a restaurant with a nice wine bar downstairs.

Holborn has had its share of famous residents over the years as you’d expect. Charles Dickens lived in Doughty Street close-by where there is now a museum and world champion motorcyclist Barry Sheene spent his early years growing up in the area.
