Moving to Islington?
Islington is basically the central District of the London Borough of the same name,
stretching in effect from Islington High Street to Highbury fields. It could mostly be described
as ‘inner-city’ and is a thriving and vibrant part of London. Islington is serviced by three
stations of London Underground Services at Angel and Essex Road( both on the Northern Line) and
Highbury and Islington, on the Victoria Line and the over ground North London Line. The old A1
road cuts through the area and as a result ,as do many London Bus routes, also there is a
large bus depot near Angel Station.
The history of Islington dates back to Saxon times but more recently it was an area known
for growing vegetables, particularly during the 17th and 18th century, largely due to the local
water source. The neighbourhood became rather popular with Londoners and as a result a number of
public houses sprang up to locals and visitors. Upper Street became the focus with many tea
gardens and ale houses appearing there, and this focus on entertainment continued into the 19th
century when music halls and theatres were established in the region of Islington Green. This
coincided with the introduction of the bulk of the district’s housing boom and pretty soon the
whole parish was being populated. This continued into the 20th Century and despite around 3000
homes being damaged during the War, Islington continued to become one of London’s areas with
least open space. Georgian terraced houses were patronised by the middle-classes and a period
of gentle gentrification began , bringing the area up to the rather fashionable level it enjoys
today.
In recent years the completion of the Victoria line and the renovation of Angel Tube station
have meant that the area is now popular with developers keen to build flats and apartments
designed to cater for young professionals who now deem the neighbourhood to be suitably
trendy!
The main shopping area in Islington could probably be said to be centred around Upper Street
which runs roughly from Islington High Street to Highbury Corner. It is extremely fashionable and
is home to boutique style shops as well as well known chain stores, mixed with a multitude of
bars and restaurants. If you’re looking for bigger stores keep walking until you reach Holloway
road, near the Emirates Stadium, where you’ll find Waitrose, Marks and Spencer’s and Argos to
name a few.
As you’d expect from an area of this kind, there is a dizzying area of food and drink choice
covering just about every style and taste you could possibly imagine. If you had to narrow it
down, British food lovers must try S & M Cafe on Essex road, where you’ll get fabulous bangers
and mash and loads of other things traditionally British. Back on Upper Street try the
Gallipoli Bazaar a Turkish and Moroccan restaurant, it’ very good indeed.!
Notable residents include ex Prime Minister Tony Blair and singing starlet Lily Allen.
Historical Place of Interest: The King’s Head Theatre, the first-pub theatre.
