Moving to Kensington?
Kensington is a highly affluent district in West London located within the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and around 2.5 miles from Central London itself. Bordered by Chelsea, Knightsbridge, Hammersmith and Notting Hill its beating heart is Kensington High Street. The neighbourhood is fantastically served by London Underground services with stations at South Kensington, Gloucester Road and High Street Kensington, giving access to the Circle, District and Piccadilly lines. This links this area to the City, Westminster and Heathrow airport as well as many other locations within Central London. Kensington is accessible easily by road too, given that the A4, Fulham Road and Kensington Road all pass through, mostly in an East to West direction. London bus routes are not surprisingly highly prevalent here too.
Much of what is now Kensington remained largely undeveloped until the 19th Century when it became, much like a lot of today’s West End, an area of market gardens supplying London. In the 1860’s following the Great Exhibition of London in Hyde Park in 1851, the arrival of new roads signalled the development boom which created the beginnings of the neighbourhood we are familiar with today. The later arrival of the London underground sealed Kensington’s absorption into the bigger fabric of London and its reputation as a chic, affluent district was born. Many of London’s most expensive houses and apartments are located in Kensington as well as some very high-end new builds which change hands at vast sums. The district is also highly populated, but not with high-rise living, much more in the form of large, six bedroom Georgian and Victorian properties which have been divided into tasteful flats. The spin-off has impacted all Kensington’s neighbouring areas, who are almost all now considered fairly exclusive, though still a rung below Kensington itself if truth be told.
The shopping focus of Kensington is the High Street as mentioned and the shops here are almost all top names, so much so that it was named London’s second best shopping street recently, so good is the range of retail development. There is also a cluster of shops, again of a fairly high standard in nearby South Kensington but that sector is much better known for its museums than its shopping prowess.
Eating in Kensington will be good but it will not necessarily be cheap, that said there is a vast choice for most budgets. At the top end try the hushed civility of Clarkes on Kensington Church Road, it’s been there for 25 years and frankly they are rather good at what they do! Kensington Place on the same street is less intimidating and a lot more laid back so may suit those keen to relax a little.
Famous people who have had their home in Kensington include TV mogul Simon Cowell and pop superstar Madonna.
