Moving to Kew?

Kew is best described as a small town located within The London Borough of Kingston upon Thames. A popular and rather expensive residential area it is well served by public transport on London Underground services at Kew Gardens Station, a stop on the District Line. That station also has an over ground facility carrying trains on the North London Line and is located between Gunnersbury and Richmond stations. By road, Kew is very near the A205 South Circular route which provides a road link to Richmond, as well as being close to the main M4, a busy and important link to Heathrow Airport and the West in general.

The first real mention of Kew date back to the reign of King Henry VII who built the Royal Palace at Richmond, where it is mentioned in a court role associated with that nearby parish. However it is likely that the settlement has Roman origins. Certainly by the 14th Century it was big enough to pay taxes, that much we do know. A combination of the establishment of the Royal Palace and a general desire for people to move out of London meant that Kew soon became quite a popular option for the nobility who built some rather grand Stuart and Georgian houses in the area. During the 17th Century the building of Kew Palace itself and the development of Kew Gardens continued to enhance the areas reputation of rather a civilised spot on the Thames and that garden development continued, reaching Royal Botanical status in the 1800’s. The 19th century also gave way to the building of large numbers of detached and semi-detached houses, established by those who left London to call this village home, largely encouraged by the arrival of the District line which sealed the deal.

The centre of Kew today still retains a village feel and although having a mixture of High Street stores and independents, it retains almost all of the charm of its earlier years, the quaint village green is still there today. Most of what one would call the main village is fairly close to the underground station where there are several pleasant parades of shops, cafes and nice restaurants. As mentioned, shopping in Kew is very civilised indeed and the proximity of larger retail centres such as Kingston and Richmond means that it really lacks for nothing, indeed any further development could even be said to detract from its charm.

Eating in Kew is however a rewarding experience, as good restaurants are plentiful given the comparatively small scale of operations. The Glasshouse on Station parade is as good an example as you’ll find, having served up food of the very highest quality in relaxed yet opulent surroundings since 1999. For a more relaxed but no less rewarding experience try also the Inn at Kew Gardens, a gastro-pub with a patio to the rear offering good yet uncomplicated dishes to an appreciative audience of both locals and visitors alike.
