Moving to Kings Cross?
Kings Cross refers to a district of London split between the London Borough of Camden
and the London Borough of Islington one and a half miles north of the Centre of
London. As you’d expect its location and importance as a transport link mean that
it is more than well served by public transport. Kings Cross Station itself is a
hub of London Underground Services (no fewer than six lines are available here),
a National Rail over ground hub and also nearby and redeveloped St Pancras International
now handles regular trains to the Continent. Additionally London Bus routes are
plentiful as are taxi services, largely due to the location of the rail station.
Early records suggest that this area was once referred to as Battle Bridge, an ancient
crossing point on the nearby River Fleet and its thought that the surrounding area
was settled by the Romans. In 1830 a monument was built to King George IV on nearby
Grays Inn Road at its junction with Pentonville road, later to be pulled down. It
however left the area with the name we know now, Kings Cross. The railway station
actually stands at that junction now and was opened for business in 1852, St Pancras
Station lies a few hundred yards to the west and both made important contributions
to London’s economy carrying freight trains which both imported and exported important
supplies to and from the City. The whole area experienced considerable decline after
World War II as post-industrial depression set in, the result being that rental
values dropped making the whole neighbourhood attractive as a place to live for
artists and designers. The 1990’s so a development plan put in place and hotels
and other businesses appeared, followed later in that decade by cultural establishment
such as The London Canal Museum and a new home for The British Library beside St
Pancras Station. This regeneration programme continued throughout the early 21st
Century with the upgrading of the station and the opening of the Eurostar serving
St Pancras International as already touched upon
Shopping in the area is best described as adequate and there are many other better
places to go and shop nearby. Mostly you’ll find small convenience stores, betting
shops and cafes with very few high quality retail outlets although there are one
or two within the Eurostar station. It is likely though that as development of this
area continues, that situation will only improve in future years.
Many of the restaurants in the area are of multi-ethnical orientation and on the
whole they are very good. Casa Mamma, a little walk away on Grays Inn road is a
good Italian and serves authentic dishes to the local community and also Acorn House
on Swinton Lane is worth a visit being London’s first environmentally sustainable
restaurant serving lovely dishes from an open kitchen.
A famous Kings Cross association is Harry Potter whose train to school departed
from the stations mythical Platform 9 ¾
