Moving to Kingston?
Kingston is the main town in the London Borough of Kingston On Thames, located ten
miles to the south west of Central London, and one of the most important Metropolitan
areas according to the London Plan. Despite being out with the reach of London Underground
services, Kingston has two over ground stations at Norbiton and Kingston itself,
offering regular services into London Waterloo. By road, Kingston is easily accessed
from Central London via the main A3 (which actually by passes the town now) so getting
there is actually fairly easy and additionally it serves as a major bus route hub
.
The history of Kingston as a settlement by the Thames probably dates back to Roman
times but the first official record of council there was in 838 and in fact Saxon
Kings were said to have been crowned in the town. In more recent times however Kingston
was formerly part of Surrey until becoming part of the current Borough in 1965.
For much of the 20th Century much of Kingston’s activity was centred on aircraft
manufacture for British Aerospace among other well known companies. The opening
of a Polytechnic which was later to become a University has added to the town’s
attraction as a busy University town and a desirable residential area within easy
travelling distance of Central London.
Today Kingston is also a popular retail centre with only a relatively small number
of commercial offices and civic centres. The shopping experience as a result could
be described as being towards the upper end of expectations then with many popular
high street names being represented on the main shopping streets, the focal point
being The Bentall Centre, a large mall featuring the department store of the same
name as well as numerous other outlets. In the basement there is a John Lewis and
a large Waitrose supermarket also. Also nearby at the Rotunda (a former furniture
depository) there is a bowling alley, large cinema complex and also a good selection
of popular restaurant chains to add to the overall experience. The town’s old traditional
market square is still in place too and holds a market there on a weekly basis for
those in search of a more traditional shopping feel.
Not surprisingly also there is a rather good selection of places to eat and drink
in Kingston with the more traditional pubs and inns being located in the Northern
part of town. A good and rather high quality starting point would be Frere Jacques,
a delightful French restaurant by the river, offering highly authentic dishes in
very relaxed surroundings. Another nice option would be Carluccios’s an Italian
deli come restaurant on Charter quay, delightful. These and many others make Kingston
the much civilised shopping town it is and a very pleasant place to live and visit.
Famous people from Kingston include 1940’s composer Derek Bourgeois and musician
Tom Rowlands of The Chemical Brothers
Historical Place of Interest: Kingston regatta every July on the River Thames.
